Hi. Followed a link through one of the HP comms. Just to say, I really liked these and that the AU idea sounds great to me. Snarry is one of my favourites and being a lit student myself, that just pushes all my buttons. Nicely done and thanks for the great fics.

I know. It pushes all my buttons too! But I'm having a bit of difficulty getting started. *hitshead* My brain isn't producing much that can help me. I need a proper 'entrance' for the story. As soon as I have that, I'll write it. Enough inspiration from my own life as a lit student. ^^ (Sadly, though. :p)

OH MY GOD!
I just saw in your lj you live in South Africa! That's so cool! I am just taking a course in South African literature, actually reading African literature. I'm not totally 'into' and 'fascinated by' everything South African. So *drags you off to dungeons to treasure*. No, seriously. Tell me about it. About Cape Town. About you - your origins and stuff.

Oh don't worry, I've been headdesking all day. Hee, I never 'met' someone so enthusiastic about South Africa before. What do you want to know? It's hard to know you'd find interesting as all I really know is South Africa. Culture? Nature? Cities? Wilderness? People? My knowledge of South African and African literature is sadly rather lacking, but there does seem to be so little of it, and even less in my field of interest. As to my origins, I'm a mixed up mash of all the foreigners and colonisers it seems. How much do you want to know?

I love those penguin icons flying around. Where are they from?
I just think it's so strange and fascinating that South Africa created Afrikan from Dutch - it's very silly to read for a Dutch native. We are currently reading some 'striking' novels by writers (who wrote in Afrikan) about African history. What is also so remarkable is that South African history is partially so recent. But I suppose I am talking huge shit for you. If someone would start talking to me about 'grand Dutch history' I raise an eyebrow or two. :p
You obviously 'speak' English - and you are a lit major in English too? And I won't force you to tell all sorts of silly things. But I just think it's cool. I have to do a presentation on the novel Triomf (Triumph) by Marlene van Niekerk - about the white trash of Johannesburg at end of the 20th century. Very shocking.
Anyhow. Now I have a first-hand 'source'. That sounds very clever. ^^

Yeah I know, about the Kombuis Language! It would theoretically be a creole consisting of Dutch and all those other influences (from the various slaves etc). Very fascinating.
A couple of years ago (back in the days when I was stupid ;)) I once read the label of an bottle of SA wine - which was written in Afrikaans. I said something like: "Well, that's a very bad translation into Dutch." (You know, how sometimes automatic translation things can mess everything up
( ... )

Aww, shucks you make me blush! Sure I have no objection to being friended.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to start reading Afrikaans again. My lit knowledge is pathetic. Maybe you could come over on exchange. Or for your Masters. I know there are programs that invite Afrikaans students to go study in the Netherlands, I'm sure there would be a reverse.
