So, the cold that wasn't going to keep me off work notched up enough that I decided I really needed three days at home. The upside to this was that I put some serious hours into Witcher 3. I'm still not ready to say I'm in love but I am getting the hang of it a bit more. I even remembered to use signs against Jenny o' the Wood!
I really like Geralt's dry humour and I like the fact that I'm helping people. Helping people is always good. There is also a lot of killing people, though. Bandits mostly but also someone who was knocking over shrines. Should I have walked away from that one? I don't believe in the gods, so what's it to me? But I also think people should be able to worship as they choose. Dunno...
My ability slots are coming along and I now have a Greater Blue Mutagen to boost my signs. I think the problem is that I'm still not sure what the story is about. I have, however, realised that the format isn't REALLY that different to the games I'm used to, it's just more explicit.
So, in FF8, for example, you go to Ifrit's Cave then go on your first mission. You do those things and move on to the next, but there's no real record of them (except you have Ifrit as a summon and you get scored on the mission which affects your pay). In a 'modern' game, each of those things is a quest and you have a record of things left to do and things done. Random encounters may be gone but there are still plenty of beasties around to kill off for items and EXP. And the 'undiscovered' locations are additional sources of cash, EXP and, sometimes, additional quests. And FF games are great for giving you random sidequests - Turtle's Paradise posters, anyone?
And even the buttons aren't THAT different. I mean, all FF games have menus, even 15. I think the Gambit system is my favourite battle system of all time, though. Tell the characters what you want them to do and let them get on with it. It just throws me that I can't just press X for everything.
I am missing the interaction between a number of characters, though. I know Geralt sometimes travels with others (Keira for example) and there is some chat between them, but mostly it's just him. And I feel sorry for the oh-so-great Witcher being controlled by me...
In other news, I got another rejection email from an agent *sigh* But at least they wished me luck, this time, and suggested a writing forum for me to visit - Writer's Workshop. I want to reorganise my mornings to spend time on writing websites and/or actually writing rather than Facebook.
OK, I'm getting hungry. Bye for now, LJ.
