So it turns out the email was sent to an address I don't really use. I don't check that account every day. It's connected to my other account so that most emails sent there end up in the account I actually use. But this one, this very, very urgent and important one, didn't. Still not entirely my fault, but I can't really blame the dean, either. The IT people, maybe?
We ended up rescheduling the meeting, and I am not looking forward to Monday, but I think I'll be able to explain myself.
Now the only thing that I'm still really mad about is that they called my parents. Seriously. Dad got a call from the school and now I'm in trouble. How old am I again? So, of course, my parents think it's something very, very serious. What have I done? Am I about to be fired? But I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is. The problem is that they found Dad's phone number before they found mine, so they just called him instead of me, because what's the difference? That's what happens when you work in a place where most of the senior staff knew your dad before you were even born. They treat you almost like an extention of him. Like you're not really a whole separate person. Or like you're not really an adult. Either way, I really should look for a job somewhere else for a few years. Somewhere I can make my own mistakes and deal with the consequences myself.
