I had the pleasure of seeing The Darjeeling Limited on Friday, in my own town mind you, saving me a 2 hour drive to Boston. I'm really impressed with the new theater. Besides playing movies that I'd otherwise never see on the big screen, the entire building is really well designed. The seats are super comfortable, placed in a way that you can actually see over the melon-sized heads in front of you.
As for the movie, I enjoyed it. The cinematography and aesthetics alone makes it worth recommending. As far as the characters go, I was kind of torn. We're given the same quirky, deadpan dialog found in Anderson's other films. However, the three brothers here are simply arrogant Americans in another country. While that may be humorous, the story drastically changes midway through and without giving anything away, we're suddenly asked to care, on a personal level, for them. I found it difficult to do. All in all, I felt Royal Tenenbaums did a far better job tackling the family dynamic than this, but it was entertaining nonetheless. It's just no Bottle Rocket or Rushmore.
Thinking back to when I saw Anderson's last film(The Life Aquatic) in one of those shitfest theaters on Louden Road, I recall it being fairly empty. And half of them left halfway through the film. Red River theater was a much different experience. The theater, which holds just as many people as the aforementioned theater, was completely full. When the credits rolled, everyone clapped. Not one person left until the credits were finished, and a few of us stayed even longer just to discuss the film. It was truly my most enjoyable theater experience since Snakes on a Plane.
