(no subject)

What is art? I've been pondering this question recently, and have yet to come to a conclusion thusfar.

Is art a piece that contains certain attributes making it so? Or is art subjective and truly "in the eye of the beholder?" Is artistic value held by the piece itself or in the experience one haves while one percepts it?

If a Van Gogh paints itself in a forest and there is no one around to see it... is it art?

If art is completely subjective, then Van Gogh's "Starry Night" is not necessarily any more artistic than Brittany Spears' latest album. What are the implications of art's lack of objectivity. Does this imply that art critics, as well as art schools are completely unnecessary?

Kant's theory suggests that aesthetic judgments contain four principal features; subjective, disinterested, universal, and necessary. Now, how can a work of art be both subjective and universal? He provides a theory that purports that they in fact can have all these features in a way that actually makes sense, though I won't attempt explaining it here for it would take far too long.

Although I am leaning towards Kant's theory, I have yet to come to a definite conclusion, and I'm curious as to what you guys think(the few people who actually read my journal).
