Manny 'Chevrolet' Bruno

When Bruno ran for mayor in 2002, he touted himself as "a troubled man for troubled times." After Katrina, he says, "I'm troubled now more than ever."

Bruno, an entertainer fueled by sarcasm, received 277 votes in the last mayor's race, "and I probably knew about 50 people." He is not a member of a political party, but he said he is endorsed by Jeffrey Diket, a well-known local Libertarian.

Bruno said he plans to make New Orleans the "new Amsterdam" with state-of-the art levees that would be paid for by legalizing prostitution and hashish bars.

Because no one listened to his plea in 2002 for an economic aid package for New Orleans like the Marshall Plan that revived Western Europe after World War II, Bruno wryly suggests giving communism a chance this time.
