Attack of the Killer Plot Bunny

Nov 26, 2010 20:48

We've all had those, haven't we? You read something or watch something and the next thing you know, there's a plot bunny you just can't shake. Well, I've had a really really strange one since I started reading Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I'm not even finished reading it yet and this damn plot bunny's bouncing all over the place.

Basically the plot bunny consists of three things, don't ask me why:
1. retelling of Guards! Guards! from Sybil's point of view in first person narrative
2. the retelling to be organized ala Hero's Journey; ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal of the call, etc.
3. (the most ridiculous and definitely hilarious detail) since it's first person narrative, Sybil's narration should have that Private Detective Inner Monologue style.

Thinking about it now, it could work in a really silly sort of way. In Guards! Guards!, Sybil's call to adventure and refusal of the call are pretty straightforward.
Call to Adventure: Vimes knocks on front door at Scoone Ave.
Refusal of the Call: no one answers front door so Vimes goes 'round the back.

And the film noir elements could work because of Sybil dealing with Vimes' shape-shifting nature. Ok, I'm aware that Vimes is pretty straightforward but not to someone who's just met him and definitely not in Guards! Guards! The character development he underwent could be seen as shape-shifting. To Sybil, I could see him being something of a homme fatal, hot with a hint of danger. If Sybil is the hero than Vimes encompasses a bunch of story archetypes. He's the herald, the mentor and possibly the shadow. And... I'm leaking into the hero's journey stuff. You see!?! It all just... fits. Now if I could just write film noir style inner monologue without bursting into fits of giggles... although, that's probably the point. Just the idea of Sybil thinking of Vimes in a hard-boiled detective tone throws me into a huge fit of laughter.

Preview:
'I’ve never been the sort of woman that had any interest in drama or adventure. Give me dunging fork and a swamp dragon with even a mild case of Heaves and I’m in heaven. Mine has always been a quiet, uneventful life… except for the occasional dragon explosion. That was just how I liked things. I am what they call either a grown woman or lady of a certain age. If I’d wanted trouble in my life, I would have gone out looking for it. Then he walked into my life.'

I might need some work on the noir tone but I promise there will be some really funny metaphors at some point.
