2012 Movie Top 5 List

Looper

I kept reading (and hearing) that Looper was a really good sci-fi movie. This, of course, made me a bit sceptic, because usually when this happens and I'm expecting to see a good movie it turns out to be disappointing (expectations too high & all that). However, not this time. Looper tackles time travel in a very down to earth way, but still comes out with a solid conclusion. Also it stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt which seems to have a good taste in picking out movies, and Bruce Willis in an action flick is usually a good thing.. funny how this is not the first time though that he shows his face in a time travel movie (12 monkeys anyone?).

Chronicle

The found footage genre is really becoming a thing these days, but I don't mind too much IF it's done well. And Chronicle does it well.. really well! With all these superhero movies flying around the premise of three teenagers getting superpowers isn't anything new, but when the main character has a troubling background (and I really felt for this guy) and starts misusing his powers, things get interesting fast. Because it's found footage the special effects aren't always that clear, but I was quite impressed with how it all looked. I also liked how they didn't attempt to explain their superpowers, but the ending gave room for a sequel so let's just hope they quit while they're ahead.

The Hunger Games

Never read the book, but it was refreshing to see a (good) action flick with a female lead. I mean, how long ago has it been.. I'm thinking Alien(s)? The comparison with Battle Royale is easily made, but that's not really fair I think. Yes, the premise it basically the same, but the execution is different. The story revolves around Katniss, unfortunately there's another love triangle thing going on, but unlike Twilight we have a strong girl who doesn't whine about her predicament and takes charge of things instead. I also liked the political structure in this (semi-)post-apocalyptic world with Capitol running all the other districts. I think the books are a trilogy so I'm looking forward to a sequel.

So yeah, I guess 2012 was quite a decent movie year, and with a sequel to the new Star Trek (and X-Men: First Class) movie coming out next year I'm already looking forward to 2013. Also.. Django Unchained! =)
