Only recently I learned that The Twilight Zone wasn't a show conceived in the 80's.. the original series date back all the way from 1959. I still love the 80's series and as a kid it was pretty scary and intense at times. But mostly I think I loved the imaginative stories that would thrill and excite me.
After discovering that "The Angry Videogame Nerd" is actually a big fan of movies (and a filmmaker himself) I kept a close eye on his cinemassacre website and not so long ago he posted his favourite top 10 episodes of the original series. Now if you can push through the black and white material and the sometimes cheap looking sets there are some real gems to be found. Some are real classics and have been parodied often, like the "To Serve Man" episode which was parodied by The Simpsons on one of their Halloween Specials. Futurama once showed their version of "Time Enough At Last", which I remembered quite clearly. Well I've just seen the original episode and it didn't disappoint. It's about a man who loves reading and by chance survives a nuclear holocaust leaving him all by himself with nothing do. He gets so desperate he ponders shooting himself until his eyes fall on a destroyed library which still has enough books for him to read. He's overjoyed by the sight of this, but in the end manages to break his one pair of reading glasses. He falls down between piles of books repeating to himself "It's not fair". (Oh the irony)
Then when the credits roll I was actually paying (somewhat) attention to it and I noticed the name Burgess Meredith and I thought to myself.. I know that name. So I looked it up and guess what,
Yeah, none other.
But now I feel like watching Futurama again, their intro still rocks.
