After breakfast they sat around talking. Stuart was talking to Mom. And Marie and Dad were teasing each other. Betty was silent, she hadn’t eaten. She still felt sick. But now she had a sweet secret that buoyed her up and made her smile. She couldn’t wait to tell Walter.

“So what else are we going to do today? I know you guys have a whole day planned out.” Stuart said.

“Well, we’re thinking of taking you guys to the Vassar college art museum.” Said Mrs. Fish.

“That sounds swell!” Marie said. “I’d love to see their newest exhibit.”

“Are you much of an art lover, Walter?” asked Mr. Fish.

“Uhhh…it’s alright I guess.” He replied mumbling into his chest.

“Betty is it okay with you?” Mrs. Fish asked.

“Sure.” Betty said.

“Okay then it’s settled.” Mr. Fish said.

“We’ll clear up,” Marie said. “Come on Betty, let’s help Mom with the dishes.”

“No, no,” Mrs. Fish said cautiously. “Betty needs to stay here.”
Mrs. Fish gave Betty a meaningful look.

“Oh yes.” Betty said.

Mrs. Fish and Marie left the dinning room with piles of dirty dishes.

“I think I’ll go outside for a smoke.” Stuart said, stretching and getting to his feet.

“If you’d like I can lend you my copy I, the Jury now.” Mr. Fish said to Walter.

“Thanks, I think I’d like that.” Walter replied.

“It’s in the other room… I think… if you wouldn’t mind coming with me, while I look.” Mr. Fish said.

“Sure.” Walter replied.

The two men got up and began to leave the room.

“Walter, we need to talk.” Betty said to his retreating back.

“Yes, fine in a minute.” He said.

“Okay.” Betty sighed.

And he left the room. She noticed that he’d left his Sherlock Holmes book on the table. She knew her Mom’s cleaning habits. The book would be whisked away to some distant book shelf if it stayed here. She picked it up. She’d take it up to his room.

She mounted the stairs and went to the guest room. She lovingly placed the book on the bedside table. She noticed he hadn’t made his bed. The bedding smelled like him, a smell that she had gotten used to and grown to love. She thought the previous night and worry over took her. What if they’d harmed the baby? She had to go and tell him now. She turned and left the room.
She hurried down the hallway and to the stairs. In her rush she stumbled and with a cry she tumbled down the stairs.
In a matter of seconds her family had come from various parts of the house.

She was bruised, aching and her glasses had fallen off. The whole world was blur. Also there was this horrible pain in her abdomen. Like a cramp but ten times worse. And her back hurt.

“I’m fine, just fine,” She said wincing in spite of the pain at the blurred figures above her.

“Oh Betty… I don’t think you are…” Marie said in a horrified tone.

“What?” Betty said. “It wasn’t much no broken bones…”

“Betty look down…” Walter said. “Look at your dress.”

And she looked down. The pretty dress with the cherry pattern was soaked with blood below the waist. Now she could feel the slickness and wetness on her thighs. Blood, lots and lots of blood. She stared in horror.

“What… what? Happened?” She said.

There was sinking realization something terrible had occurred to the baby.

“Here, I’ll help you up.” Mrs. Fish said.

She took Betty’s hand and slowly got her to her feet.

“I’ll call Dr. Townsend.” Said Mr. Fish. “It’s the weekend but he’ll come once I explain what happened.”

After taking a bath to wash off the blood. Betty was put to bed. Dr. Townsend came and examined her. Dr. Townsend had been the family Doctor since forever. He was genial white-haired man with a slight British accent.

“Well, only a few bruises and no broken bones, you’re lucky a fall down the stairs could be fatal.” He said.

“What about my baby, is it alright?” Betty asked.

He sighed and looked down. “Betty, the fall caused a miscarriage. You lost the baby.”

Just like that the perfect life which had seemed so close was lost. She began to sob, deep wracking sobs. She removed her glasses and covered her face with hands and wept into them.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. But you are young and there will be other chances.” Dr. Townsend said.

Walter sat in the living room, holding up a book in front of his face like a shield. Stuart paced the room. Marie sat biting her finger nails. Mr. And Mrs. Fish sat on the sofa, holding each other.

“Geez when the Doc be done?” Stuart asked no on in particular.

“Dr. Townsend has to do a an full examination.” Mrs. Fish said in dull sad voice.

“And what’s with you?!” Stuart said turning to Walter, anger clouding his face. “Some fiancé you are, sitting here reading a book like you don’t even care.”

“Stuart!” Mr. Fish said. “We all have our own ways of showing our feelings.”

The truth was behind the book, he felt anxious and scared. What id she had gotten badly hurt? How could anyone lose that much blood.…and be.… if anything happened to Betty he didn’t know what he would do.

“…He doesn’t give a damn, Dad! That girl had more shit dumped on her then anyone I know. She doesn‘t need some creep who‘s more interested in Sherlock fucking--- Holmes then---”

“---Stuart watch your language!” Mrs. Fish said.

“Leave me alone.” Walter said.

“Oh so he speaks.” Stuart said. “Why should I? God knows what happening to Betty and you act like--- nothing’s wrong.” And then Stuart went over to Walter. He ripped the book out of his hands and glared at him.

“That wasn’t mine, that belonged to the library!” Walter said.

“Oh, the LIBRARY is what matters to you. Betty doesn’t. You want to see what I think of your Library….?” Stuart said.

“I said leave me alone.” Walter’s tone was hostile and warning.

“No, listen you ugly pipsqueak you aren’t worthy to lick the dirt off my sis’s shoes.” Stuart said.

Stuart was in Walter’s face. Standing close and glaring at
him. Walter clenched his fists. And that’s when Stuart made a big mistake, he grabbed Walter by the lapels and jerked him to his feet. Admists the screams of protest of his family. It was to much, just to much. What happened next was red blur to Walter. Nothing mattered but punching, kicking and beating the man in front of him. There was screaming in the background. Next thing he knew Mr. Fish and Dr. Townsend were pulling off a prone Stuart. There was blood on his knuckles and Stuart’s nose was a bloody ruin.

As he was restrained he shouted out. “I LOVE HER! DON’T TELL ME HOW ACT! I LOVE HER! YOU DON‘T UNDERSTAND NONE OF YOU UNDERTSTAND!”

Marie was cradling Stuart’s head and Mrs. Fish was glaring at Walter. As the rage abated he felt that he would not be welcome at the Fish’s house again. Good. But what if Betty… he had to see Betty…

He ran out of the room. He jolted up the stairs and burst into the room.

“What happened downstairs, I heard screaming…?” Betty asked, looking up from the bed.

She had been crying her face was red and puffy.

“Nothing. Betty are you---you alright?” He asked.

“Oh, well I didn’t break anything. But well… ---there was something important I was going to tell you--- I was pregnant.” Betty said.

“Was?” He asked.

“Yes. When I fell I---I-I lost the baby.” She murmured dissolving into sobs.

He sat down on the bed next to her. He put his arms around her. He held her and she cried into his shirt. So he was going to be father… for a little while.
