Here it is, a gift for SBC. (:

Title: Monger
Fandom: Naruto
Characters: Shino, Sasuke, Kiba, and Sakura.
Summary: Shino and Sasuke go fishing.

Even Sasuke was getting unnerved by the lack of communication after twenty minutes of nothing but cicadas chirping. And, perhaps he was also jealous that Shino had managed to catch a total of four fish, so far, while he hadn't caught any. He also barely knew Shino, but Kiba was the most reliable for scouting, so he was the one who had to stay back. Their fourth member of the quadrant, Sakura, was with him in case anything happened.

Shino caught his fifth fish, raising brows from the one next to him.

"So, do you fish much?" he asked, puckering his lips a bit in thought.

Shino removed the fish from the hook and gave a shake of his head. "I'm lucky," he replied, and they were back to silence. Sasuke sighed, trying not to sound exasperated, but this really was tiresome. Kiba would have been better, here. He wasn't that bad of a scout, himself, but he really just didn't want to sit next to Shino. Sakura would have made for better conversation, but he knew he would have resented that, too.

He sniffed and stared at the water. "I was never a good fisher."

"Ah."

"Yeah." He crisscrossed his legs. He shortly felt a tug on his line, so he reeled it up and frowned. It was just a mask of an ANBU. He looked to Shino, who was just in the process of putting his line back in the water. Remembering that he was a user of bugs, he asked: "What kind of bait do you use?"

"I use worms."

"Are they special worms?"

"Not particularly."

Sasuke sighed again.

"You're not used to failure, are you?" Shino asked, looking to his comrade through his pitch-black shades. He hit a sore spot. "I can tell."

This time it was Shino who had the last word, because Sasuke didn't feel that he was obliged to reply to something like that. When failure was mentioned, all that he could think of was his reluctant and forced return to Konoha after the prolonged incident with Orochimaru. A year later, when he encountered his brother again, he was given a royal beating. He simply couldn't win.

After finally accepting this silence, he could hear voices in the distant. They were familiar and unwelcome -- Kiba and Sakura -- who obviously hadn't run into anything threatening, considering their tone.

"I wonder if Shino-kun and Sasuke-kun had any luck, hm?"

Shit.

"Shino," Sasuke whispered, "give me some of your fish."

"Why?"

"Just do it," he demanded while reaching out for his bucket, but Shino moved it further away.

"You're not used to failure, are you?"

Sasuke grimaced, but his attempts to get the fish stopped. Frowning, he hunched his back over and prayed for at least one fish before they approached-- in which case the chances were slim.

"Wow, talk about lucky," Kiba's voice suddenly sounded behind them. He was looking into Shino's bucket, as well as Akamaru. "Though you're gonna have to catch some more. I'm starving."

"What did you find?"

"We dismantled some traps," Sakura explained. She peered into Sasuke's bucket and snorted. "Kiba-kun, look at this!"

...

"Ha, ha! Shino, get a load of this! The famous Uchiha can't even catch a fish!"

"Don't laugh," Sakura chuckled, and then put a hand on his shoulder. Sasuke shrugged it off. "It's okay, not everyone's a monger."

With a grumble, he shoved the fishing pole in Kiba's hands and stormed off.

No, he simply could not win.
