So I ran out of nitrile gloves last week for my chem labs. I was only dreaming that I had enough left over from CHM139/138/247 when in reality I only had like 2 pairs left to start the term with. We use nitrile ones instead of latex for several reasons: they are resistant to strong acids/bases where as it might go through latex ones. Another reason would be latex or vinyl gloves have that talc powder that will interfere with measuring masses of certain solids that we use. In other words, as stupid as it sounds, it will affect the significant digits of our measurements.
ie: it might affect the 4 decimal places of our mass. like, 43.8475g that 5 might be off because of the talc powder. (not that you or myself would care)
Anyway, so since the Chem Club store at school is not available anymore (not that I know of) I was freaking out last night thinking of places that might sell them.
One would think Walmart might have it. They had everything but nitrile gloves.
Great. So I went to Dollarama since Shu claims that they have everything there.
Nothing. Only vinyl and latex.
To panic even more, I decided to drive to Canadian Tire thinking "THEY MUST HAVE IT." because my next destination would be Home Depot if they didn't.
I'm walking though the store and lo and behold! I found the precious nitrile gloves! But then I looked at the price and thought "you son of a bitch."
It was $3.99 for ONE pair! At school, they sell it for $5 a bag of at least 15 pairs.
Feeling desperate yet cheap at the same time, I decided to ask the desk staff and see if they had any disposable ones. The one that I found were like heavy duty, use-more-than-once type gloves. (I didnt want to reuse them because I might "contaminate" my future experiments in the lab if I didn't wash them properly etc.)
Thank goodness there was another section in the Cars accessories area that held disposable ones. There was a box of 100 for $30. I laughed and said no. Then proceeded in purchasing the bag of 10 for $4.99. Still expensive but I was very desperate.
I cannot wait until the chem store opens again in January.
Moral of the story: just let the hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide burn your skin.
Damn nitrile gloves.
