Me vs. the Playstation - an Epic Battle

The Backstory:

My first playstation was well used. So much so that its laser could barely read a disc, even if it was brand new. My brother gave me his playstation - it's much nicer and has no trouble reading anything! But I've always had issues with Final Fantasy VIII and IX. On both of these games, discs 1-3 play just perfectly, but disc 4 won't load/read. The discs are pretty scratched up, unfortunately (well-loved, you know), so I assumed that was the problem. My solution was to spend ~$40 on a double pack of a brand new copy of both games.

The result of my gambit:

Disc 4 of IX plays perfectly. I just beat the game about an hour ago - for the first time in about 5 or 6 years! But...disc 4 of VIII doesn't work. And not only doesn't work, won't read AT ALL. Every time I try to play it, it says "Please insert Playstation DVD-ROM" FUCK YOU! THAT IS A FUCKING PS GAME!! Even my old one still read the disc to a point (wouldn't load the save). Now, my only option appears to be to buy a completely new Playstation. Or maybe upgrade to a PS2. Wonder how much that'll run me, especially with money being so tight nowadays?

How irritating.

I'm about ready to take a hammer to this thing. All I want to do is beat Final Fantasy VIII again! I haven't been able to beat it for 6 years! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!?!

*cries*
