Well, here I am in a hotel in Reno for the jazz festival. God bless my wireless connection- I'm leeching off some poor stranger's internet service and they don't even know it. Getting decent speeds too.
Thanks all for the birthday wishes and threats of potential embarassment (Andrea, Jason). Jordan mentioned voting but there really isn't much that interests me that you can do once you turn 18.
Me, Matt and Joey were wandering around tonight looking for a decent place to eat inside the Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, but everything was either closed or too expensive. I ended up just buying a fruit juice at a gas station and ate some of Matt's Wheat Thins for a truly balanced, nutritious meal. Before we left the casino though, Matt was hitting up a few slots even though he just turned 18 today (the 23rd), and the gambling age is 21. I have to admit gambling is a vice that's always kind of weirdly interested me, so making sure no security guards were around to check ID, I put in and promptly lost a dollar in a slot machine. Maybe I would've done more if I had won something but gambling's kind of lost its mystery to me, so most likely I won't do it anymore. Besides, I was starting to feel ill just from the thick cigarette smoke that took the place of oxygen in the casino.
Whatever interest in gambling I have I blame on my father. He always took me up to Reno and Tahoe just so he could gamble and I could tag along. I guess it's good that it's not as appealing anymore, I might've wasted a lot more money than I could have.
I like it in the mountains, though. That odd smell (I guess it's pine in the thin air of high altitudes, I don't know) that always hangs in the air whenever I've been to Reno or Tahoe is just kind of soothing. If it didn't seem so backwater and cut off from everything, I might actually consider moving to a place like this. I'm not sure how much I would be able to get used to heavy snow, though. And there isn't much in the way of culture, either.
Playing tomorrow morning in the jazz combo. Shouldn't be too bad. I actually enjoy playing bass enough that school-related music isn't that unpleasant. Even if it's boring I add and mess around with it enough to make it interesting.
edit: in keeping with my new favorite hobby,
ok, these two are from the drive up: (these were the ones that weren't blurry as hell)
and the big electric clown at circus circus, which is just so idiotic and overblown i had to get a picture of it:
