drunk on sleep
(chapter o1)

Loud pulsating music, and flashing strobe lights, glass after glass and the throat burning because of the alcohol, but he doesn't really care. He keeps dancing on the dance floor and all he sees is a blur of changing neon lights before he closes his eyes and all that’s left is just silence and darkness.

Everyone always complains about how boring junhyung is, but he doesn’t really care. He knows that everyone gets bored of him in the end, he knows that everyone leaves in the end, but he’s okay like that. The right person will come with time and he has no hurries about it, because he knows the right person will like him just as he is, and won’t try to change his admiration for old chinese movies nor his habit of writing random lines of love songs at the edge of wasted books, newspapers, napkins, everywhere…

But what if he points out the wrong person as his right one? Sometimes the heart decides without asking the owner, and there’s nothing he can do about it.

___

A pile of books appears suddenly by his side and lands with a thump when gikwang puts them over the table. Gikwang is his classmate at the university and doesn’t seem to dislike junhyung’s company, but the very opposite, so he’s like a friend for him.

Junhyung looks at him with the corners of his eyes as he takes seat behind him, trying to pretend he hasn’t taken his eyes off his own pile of books. Gikwang is smiling and his black hair falls straight into his eyes (and junhyung is this close to believe he’s humming a song), when the black haired realizes that there are two black eyes staring directly at him, he lifts his glance and smiles at junhyung.

“what?” he asks, widening his smile and his eyes become two shining crescents.

Junhyung lays back his chair and yawns as he scratches his disheveled hair “will you be able to read all that for Friday’s exam?” gikwang lifts an eyebrow.

“since when are you so concerned?” he mocks.

“oh, shut up. I was just asking” he says as he goes back to his lecture. Gikwang chuckles and opens a random book starting with his study (and junhyung wonders why he asked, anyway, since gikwang was one of the best students and was obviously able to make it a hundred of times if it was possible)

They met at the university. There is not a concrete event junhyung remembers about their first meeting nor their first talk so it was probably a random “hi”, “hey”, “my name is yong junhyung”, “and mine is lee gikwang”, and little by little they became friends.

Probably the thing junhyung likes the most about him is that he doesn’t really expect anything of him, maybe he knows upfront there’s nothing he can give in return, and even when he’s dull, boring, doesn’t receive visits for his birthday and hardly picks up the phone, even when junhyung is like that, gikwang likes him.

(junhyung has always been pretty clueless to notice what’s happening, too immersed in his own world, but not that clumsy to not notice what is evident)

He thinks he feels okay with gikwang: he’s kind, silent, clever and has a beautiful smile he can’t help but stare. And he has noticed his waist fits perfectly at his arm’s length, as well as the spaces between his fingers were done for his own. He feels okay beside gikwang’s side and perhaps they should try this thing people call a serious relationship.

___

On Friday gikwang doesn’t show up at the university and it’s such a bad thing since this exam had a high percentage for the final mark, but that wasn’t what junhyung was thinking about while phoning him after he finished sending a text. There had to be a powerful reason to make gikwang miss such important test… and he looked so good just yesterday.

“yoboseyo” he hears his voice at the other side of the line and junhyung immediately realizes something was worst than he thought.

“what is it? Are you okay?” he asks and he wishes he could sound more worried, rather than scolding, but his voice has always been like that and gikwang knows well.

“yea. I am” he answers, though that yea doesn’t convince junhyung at all. There’s a pause before he goes on “it’s… about my stepbrother”

“you never told me you had an stepbrother”

“you never asked about yoseob”

That answer annoyed junhyung, somehow, and it wasn’t just that unusual tone, but the fact that there was something about gikwang he didn’t know about, the fact that there was someone else in his life he didn’t know (when he thought he was the only one, and everything was so fine, and there were just the two of them)

“and what is it?”

Gikwang didn’t answer at first and there was such a long silence that junhyung almost thought he had hung up.

“my mom kicked him out of the house.”
