from silent dreams we never wake
There was something beyond the other side of the stream running in front of the wooden house where Sooyoung lived, something her parents didn't know about. but it was something that she used to know so well, because at the other side of the stream there was a similar wooden house where a girl called Yuri lived.
The first time sooyoung and yuri actually talked, they both were nine years old. Sooyoung took off her sandals to cross the stream -which reached a little below the knees, back then, she was already tall- because it has been a while since she started to hear a little girl crying. When she reached the other side, she circled the house looking for the origin of the whining, finding a girl kneeling down at the foot of a tree, burying her knuckles in her eyes, crying disconsolately.
"Are you okay?" Sooyoung asked. Yuri was scared.
It was the very first time they talked.
When they were ten, they'd run to the village, hand in hand, to buy all the things Yuri's mother asked for. When they were eleven, they'd sleep together, while the rain fell against the window panes. During sooyoung’s twelfth birthday, the older by a few months stole her first kiss. When they were thirteen, Yuri drew a heart and said it was sooyoung’s, that she could keep it if she wanted. Sooyoung always wondered if she was talking about the drawing or her heart. There was a time when they didn't talk for three weeks because Yuri arranged a surprise and visited the younger to find a boy in sooyoung’s house (what she didn't want to hear from the beginning was that it was sooyoung’s cousin). When they were fourteen, Sooyoung told her to not be afraid, but Yuri never was. At fifteen, they both found themselves alone in yuri's wooden house and sooyoung pulled her close, pressing her body against her own, taking her body, taking her heart.
What sooyoung's parents didn't know about the other side of the stream wasn't Yuri, because they knew about the little girl the first time the girls met and the younger brought her home, desperately not knowing what to do with the crying unnie. What they didn't know, was what happened that night in yuri's room.
When the older was seventeen and sooyoung was still sixteen, yuri boarded a one-way ship to the states. She was afraid, for the first time during these eight years of friendship. She hugged the only person she will always truly love and she said so. she said she will always love her, that she will never forget about her, she said that her body, her soul and heart were hers, just hers, no matter where she will be, no matter with who. And so she left. And sooyoung stayed at the port until the ship faded away and disappeared in the horizon.
From that day onwards, sooyoung started to work, because she didn't have time to think about yuri, about her skin pearl-shaped by the sweat drops running down her curves, her hair stuck to her face, her smile under the dim light of the lamp, the way her breasts felt under her own fingertips or the sweet taste of her kisses. There were several times in which she bit her own tongue 'cause she didn't want the tears to blur her eyes. She herself cut her hair to the nape and she started to save money.
When sooyoung was twenty, she also boarded a ship and unfolded an old piece of paper, in which was written Yuri's address in this new country. She didn't know any english but she didn’t needed the Korean either, because the one she was looking for didn't have to tell her any words for her to understand it all. she made all the way to take her away, to return to the little town where they both were brought up and met love together.
It was not easy finding the address. She got lost and spent two nights in two different houses of some ahjummas who had taken pity on her, but she eventually stood in front of an old and worn and yet well-kept building, which was supposed to be Yuri's apartment. The sky was cloudy and Sooyoung was dirty and tired, but her hope was still flaming inside her ribs. She went upstairs and with her heart in her throat, knocked on the door.
Her breathing was cut short but when the only one she had loved in her life opened the door, the one with she learned to live, to love, to smile, to cry, to keep silence, to kiss. The years didn't seem to go pass her and her black hair was still falling like a waterfall over her shoulders, the way sooyoung liked. But she felt her heartbeats sinking all the way down to her feet and her stomach squeezing when she noticed Yuri's swollen belly, gently stroked by one of her hands.
The older said come in, and with a forgotten Korean, told the story of how she met a man who promised he'll make her happy, because she thought she would never go back to Korea, and she thought Sooyoung would remain as a memory, as many others, even though her heart hadn't changed since then.
sooyoung couldn't take another second inside that place, where she was so out of place, where every inch of the space, even the air she breathed made her heart ache more, if it was possible. She couldn't stay any longer within the apartment of the happy family the woman she loved was having, the woman that will never be hers, full with pictures of the marriage that would never be hers, staring at the picture of the one who had taken her place. She offered her hand to Yuri. Outside, they could hear children playing.
"Come with me" she said. Yuri opened her eyes.
There was no answer.
"Come with me" she insisted with the same deadpan tone of voice. Yuri closed her eyes and hugged her belly. She lowered her eyes and began to cry. "Yuri..." copious tears were running down her face, as it had always been since they were children, because yuri always cried and no tears had ever ran down sooyoung's cheeks. "Come with me" she asked one last time, and Yuri shook her head, with the two hands made into two tight fists, burying her nails in her palms, and her whole body trembled, not able to look sooyoung in the eyes.
And Sooyoung did the hardest thing she could ever had done in her life. She turned around and left, the last time in her life going through the door.
