Last weekend was spent trying to repair my lawn. I've been dealing with a brown patch infestation since last year. The problem was concealed in previous years by the bright green rye grass I always planted, but this year I didn't. This has given me an opportunity to get a head start on killing the fungi before I start fertilizing. It is of the utmost importance that you kill any fungus before adding fertilizer. Otherwise it's like a naked flame sparking petrol.
I have tried:
Green Light Fung-Away Easy to use, and very obvious when it's mixing because the chemical smell is quite strong. I would advise not having pets or people down wind as you're using this stuff. I tried to buy more, but Lowes stopped carrying it. The person I spoke with did say it worked well, and suggested an alternative method of treatment in lieu of the above product.
I had previously purchased:
Consan20 Triple-Action Wow. Is there anything this stuff can't do? It doesn't have a strong odor, and as a result I think the first time I applied it I over did it. You'll need a fertilizer/insect spray mixer that attaches to your water hose. The great thing is that it kills fungus and mold. I was spraying my lawn, and portions of my home that mold was gowning at the same time. From the label: Use Consan to treat Downy Mildew development on cut flowers, to wash interior and exterior walls, to add to paints to act as a mildewcide, to control odors in carpets, to add to laundry for odor-free sanitation, and for spot disinfection.
The next day, since I'm going for treatment & prevention, I used my drop-spreader to apply this:
Bayer Advanced Fungus Control Pretty much everyone in the world is in agreement that a drop spreader is superior to a broadcast spreader, and I'm inclined to agree. Make sure to purchase a decent one, and keep the metal parts oiled/lubed because they will rust up from all the chemicals used. It took two of these bags to adequately treat my lawn. I then gave it a good soaking with sprinklers.
I'll be watching to see if my lawn now becomes more green and if the brown patches go away. Then I'll move on to eliminating weeds, and finally, fertilizing. Then there will just be occasional prevention treatments to apply, and oh yes... mowing. How could I forget the mowing. At least I have a self-propelled mower :)
