The Rapture...Or Not

May 25, 2011 21:50

Today, the weather was actually NICE. I couldn't believe it when I woke up. It's been raining all day, every day for the last week, at least, and today it was gorgeous. A little to warm, perhaps, but not at all humid or heavy.
To celebrate once I got home from my buildOn meeting, I laced up the spiffy new hiking boots my dad bought me yesterday and went exploring in Roosevelt Forest. I didn't wear sunscreen or bug spray, so the mosquitoes became a bother after a while, but I enjoyed myself immensely,
Some words about Roosevelt: my dad and I used to go camping there a few times a year with the father-daughter YMCA group of which we were a part until I started high school. Today, I went to the scout area where we all would pitch tents and sit around fire pits until what felt like the deepest hours of the night (but what was actually 11 or 12 pm). Back then, I probably got the sense, for the only times in my life, what it must have been like to live in a little village, where everyone knows everyone and they all support one another. I know it sounds silly, but those intimate little camping trips were huge beacons of excitement in my little kid life.
I also tried to find the really gorgeous rock outcropping that my girlfriend and I discovered in March, when she was visiting. We'd sat there and talked about college, and growing up, and being young and scared and just generally knowledgeable. It was my favorite part of the weekend, especially since I'd found out that I'd been rejected from UChicago a couple of days before. That was the weekend I decided i wanted to go to Oberlin, in fact.
In any case, I was completely unsuccessful in my quest to find the rocks, and I ended up stumbling out of the woods, sweaty and completely cheerful, forty-five minutes after I'd pulled into the parking lot. After some exploring around the main pavilion, I headed back into town to meet the girl I tutor.

I'll probably be posting older entries from my other blog here--not all of them, though. That blog is so freaking whiny. I can't even stand it myself.
