So, my routine trip to the gym this afternoon ended up with me participating in a large peace/anti-Bush rally. Driving through north Phoenix, there was a huge group of people around the intersection of 24th & Camelback waving various signs. So, being the rabble-rouser that I am, I decided to bag the gym, and join the angry mass of people I just drove by.
When I got there, there was maybe only a few dozen hanging around, and after talking to one old man with a particularly nasty sign, I discovered the majority had marched down the street to Senator Kyl's office.
15 minutes later or so, the rest of the throng returned, lead by some guys dressed in Revolutionary war type clothing with drums around their necks banging out a cadence. There was easily 1500-2000 people around, shoulder-to-shoulder at all four corners of this intersection. It was a really cool vibe, like you might imagine the 60's being like, everyone talking to eachother, some people sitting on the sidewalks with bongo-drums or guitars singing, etc.
Amazingly enough, there were far more honks, peace signs and waves from passing traffic than there were nasty cat-calls and middle fingers. Even the police weren't too beligerant.
So, that's how I spent this lovely early-fall afternoon in Phoenix.
Some pics below, just from my phone. If I knew I was going to be in a protest today, I probably would have brought my real camera with me.
