I'm sitting here working on translating one of my arias, so I can figure out whether I'm shrieking out the high F's because I'm happy or sad or someone just stepped on my foot or whatever, and I've realized something: all the mezzo roles I've sung any part of have been either men or whores.
Xerxes - A man
Carmen - A whore
Rinaldo - A man
Cherubino - A man pubescent boy
Leonora - A whore
Okay, I take that back. Looking through things, I've also sung the Angel, from Elijah. But that's an oratorio, not an opera. So I should say that all my operatic mezzo experience has been singing men or whores.
(And when I say whore, I don't mean that the way I usually do, as a term of affection. These women were actually whores, in the traditional sense.)
Maybe I should look into getting some diversity in my selections.
