So this is a fic i am working on about Garth aka Aqualad aka Tempest. It introduces what I have dubbed my Quad. The pic and short bios are in the cut below.
Here is part one (nothing is betaed!)
Garth was honestly sick and tired of Roy always trying to get him to “have fun.” Tonight though, Garth didn't want to deal with the archer's antics and agreed to “go out on the town” with Roy. There was some solace at seeing Connor Hawke being dragged by Kyle Rayner.
“KYLE!” Roy shouted at seeing the emerald pair. Roy waved them over to the table they were currently sitting at.
“ROY!” Kyle shouted back. Kyle ran over to the table, Connor casually following.
Garth was always shocked at how good of friends Roy and Kyle were, despite their age difference. Garth once again felt out of place and awkward.
“I'm impressed, you finally got Garth out of his puddle,” Kyle said, earning a glare form the aquatic hero.
“Not nearly as impressive as getting Connor out of his meditation, that I could never do,” Roy admitted.
Garth noted that Connor looked more bored then annoyed at anything. Garth sighed to himself, the last time he felt this out of place was when the Outsiders first victory party. He didn't like drinking, and he didn't like how bars felt.
Garth looked up at the silent archer, even though he obviously didn't come willingly, he looked comfortable and normal in a place like this. Looking to their louder friends, they were right at home in this place. They thrived in an atmosphere of alcohol, loud music, and too many people.
“Well, seeing as how we got here first, you get to buy the first round, Rayner,” Roy said.
“Yeah, I knew you'd pull that one out,” Kyle responded. This was obviously a reference to a former meeting between the two.
Kyle headed off without asking what people wanted. Garth just hoped he'd get a glass of water. Roy had already started checking out dyed red head, while Connor just scanned the bar.
By the time Kyle had come back Roy had gotten the courage to go talk to the red head. Kyle placed a beer in front of Connor and where Roy was. He placed a glass of ice water in front of Garth.
“Thank you,” Garth said. He was touched that they didn't try to get him to drink.
“Hey its no problem, I know you aren't a big fan of alcohol and we want you to have fun too,” Kyle said. “So where did Roy head off to?”
“He is talking to the loud red head over there,” Connor said. “Looks like they are coming this way now.”
Sure enough Roy was leading the red head over, but there were 3 other girls with them. The red head herself wore plaid red pants and a black and red striped shirt. The one with teal hair and pink streaks work pink swirled pants and a black top that made and “X” across her front. The one with fully teal hair wore a white tied off shirt and white pants with teal across the bottom. The final girl, a blonde, wore basic slightly baggy jeans, a plain white halter top and was using headphones as a headband.
“Guys,” Roy started, “This is Lava.” Roy said introducing the red head. “She and her friends just moved to Star City from L.A. These are my friends, Kyle, Connor, and Garth,”
“Good to meet you all!” Lava said. She seemed like she was ready for a verbal battle. “These lovely ladies are Atmosphere,” the one with teal hair, “Gravity” the one with pink highlights, “and Snow,” the blonde.
“Those are interesting names,” Kyle said.
“Oh they aren't our real names,” Atmosphere said is a light monotone.
“They are our rave names,” Gravity said in a similar tone of voice.
“Rave names?” Kyle asked.
“Yeah! I'm MC Lava! Snow is our DJ and Atmosphere and Gravity are basically our special effects,” Lava said, very excited to be showing them off.
“That sounds fun, we will have to come check you girls out some time,” Roy said.
“That would be wonderful,” Gravity said.
“You could see Snow, in her natural habitat,” Atmosphere finished.
Snow visibly pulled away to hide behind the others.
“Come on girls take a seat and join us,” Kyle said hopping off his chair. The rest of the guys followed suit. The girls happily took the chairs, except for snow who stood behind Lava, shyly.
“So what brought you to Star City?” Roy asked.
“Well, we wanted to get out of L.A. and after talking to Grav's aunt, we decided on here,” Lava explained.
“Do you all live together then?” Roy asked.
“Nah, we'd kill each other. Grav, and Sphere live down the street in the new apartment complexes, I have a place on the other side of town in a converted Brewery, and Snow has a house on the beach,” Lava explained.
“You have a house on the beach?” Kyle asked the shy blonde.
Snow simply nodded.
“Is she OK?” Connor asked.
“Snow is,” Atmosphere said.
“Very shy,” Gravity finished.
“Do you two always speak like that?” Kyle asked.
“Most of the time,” Gravity said.
“It just be came a habit,” Atmosphere said.
“Its kinda creepy,” Kyle said.
“That's because those two have been joined at the hip since they were born. You get use to it quick. Just like you get use to Snow being quiet in public settings,” Lava said.
“And you being loud,” Atmosphere said.
“And protesting just to protest,” Gravity said.
“Oh yeah that too,” Lava said laughing.
The conversation between them continued. Garth tuned most of it out and watched the blonde. He wondered what her voice sounded like.
“You seem out of place like me,” Snow said finally. Her voice was light and sweet.
“Yeah, bars aren't that fun for me,” Garth replied, slightly embarrassed.
“What is?” Snow asked.
“I like the ocean,” Garth said.
Snow smiled softly and grabbed his hand and pulled him out of the bar. Once out, Garth finally felt like he could breath again. Snow dropped his hand and the two started walking.
“Won't the others wonder where we went?” Garth asked.
“Probably, but I'll just text Gravity later. It probably will be a while yet,” Snow said.
“Your friends said you were shy,” Garth said.
“I am, but I felt comfortable talking to you, probably because you like the ocean too,” Snow said.
“I'm glad I came out now,” Garth said.
“Me too,” Snow said.
Garth grabbed Snow's hand and the two shared a smile. The rest of the walk was silent till they reached the beach.
“Why do you like the ocean so much?” Garth said taking his shoes and socks off.
“It's silly really,” Snow said pulling her sandals off.
“There are no silly reasons to like the ocean,” Garth said.
“It's been there for me. Whenever anything bad has happened in my life I sit and stare out at the ocean and its like all my worries are taken away,” Snow said staring out over the ocean.
“What bad could have happened to you?” Garth asked, not realizing he said it out loud.
“My dad died,” Snow said.
“I'm sorry,” Garth said.
“Its ok,” Snow started walking down the beach. “He died in the 9-11 attacks. He was a fireman and while his friends were in New York, it happened. They couldn't just stand by so they ran in to help. They never came out,” Snow explained.
“Your dad was a true hero,” Garth said.
“Yeah. He was always my hero, We had this big tree in the back yard and when I was little I climbed it and got stuck. He got the ladder and I will never forget what he said to me,” Snow said. “I'll always save you. God, I don't even know why I keep talking.” Snow blushed.
“Does it matter?” Garth said looking into her eyes with a smile.
“I guess not. I just don't talk to people I just met,” Snow said.
“Well maybe we have met before,” Garth said.
“I'd have remembered you. By the way, my real name is Merla,” Snow said.
“I like Snow better,” Garth said.
“Me too. So why do you like the ocean so much?” Snow asked.
“It's...like home to me,” Garth said.
Before Snow could reply her phone rang.
“Hello? Oh hey Lava...Yeah Garth is with me...The beach...Oh, alright,” Snow said then hung up.
“They want us back?” Garth asked.
“Yep. Hey, do you, I dunno, wanna come to my place for lunch tomorrow?” Snow asked shyly as they started walking back.
“That would be nice,” Garth said.
“Um here,” Snow went into her purse and pulled out a pen and wrote her address and phone number on Garth's palm. “Lava always told me to carry a note pad.”
“Its fine, thanks,” Garth said.
“Anything I should avoid making?” Snow asked.
“Nothing with fish,” Garth said.
“Not problem, I'm a vegetarian. Oh and bring your swim suit, I do live on the beach,” Snow said.
Garth nodded and both looked at the door to the bar as they arrived.
“It was nice to finally meet someone who shares a similar interest. I can't wait to talk more tomorrow,” Garth said and kissed the back of her hand.
Snow giggled, as the door opened to the six members they had left behind.
“Where did you two go off to?” Roy said slinging an arm around Garth.
“We went to the beach,” Garth said.
“Ohhh the beach, nice touch,” Kyle said, teasing him, thought it was obvious Garth missed it.
“So Snow, did you tell him about your Aqualad shrine?” Lava asked the blonde.
Snow blushed deeply, “Why would I tell anyone about that?”
The four heroes looked to the blonde in shock.
“Because its the first thing you unpacked,” Atmosphere said.
“Besides your furniture,” Gravity said.
Snow covered her face embarrassed.
“Aqualad shrine?” Roy asked smirking.
“Oh yeah! She is a huge Aqualad fan!” Lava said.
“He is Tempest now,” Snow said muffled.
“Right! Tempest! Either way she is a fan. She has news paper clippings, photos off the internet, and anything else she could find on him,” Lava said.
“Your embarrassing her,” Gravity said.
“And in front of a guy,” Atmosphere said.
“Oops, sorry,” Lava said laughing.
“Do you all have some sort of superhero shrine?” Kyle asked.
“Nah just Snow,” Lava said.
“Speaking of Snow, we have to get going,” Atmosphere said.
“We can't go shopping till she is unpacked,” Gravity said.
They said their good byes and the girls headed off.
“Aqualad shrine, eh?” Roy said.
“She liked you before she even met ya,” Kyle said.
Garth didn't respond and simply looked to his hand. At least she wouldn't hate him for being a hero.
I hope to get part 2-4 out eventually!
