7.00pm - Channel 4 - Philosopher Alain de Botton investigates what motivates people to go on vacation and how far reality reflects their dreams. He begins with a Mediterranean cruise aboard the QE2, relishing the chance to ponder the business of travel while riding an inflatable banana off the coast of Torremolinos in Spain. Then it's a city break in Amsterdam, where holiday-makers are keen to offer alternatives to the standard tourist itinerary, before he jets off to Germany, checking out the allure of motorway service stations and airports. A Kent caravan park rounds off an informative tour, ending with the wise words of a couple who have never ventured more than 20 miles from their home - that travel is just a way of looking at the world, in which case distance is irrelevant.
..above is a description of a program that I am watching at the moment, The Art of Travel. switched it on totally by chance, and its one of the best beginings to any documentary I have seen in a long time. Alain de Botton is brilliant, he kinda reminds me of a guy I used to work with called Janek.
'Maybe one of the most naive things to do with a place we dream of,
is actually to go there?' - Alain de Botton.
