BBC 1 9pm. Had to see it twice. Like road-kill one could not look away. First episode centred on a rip-off of Hannibal Lecter, but with a gender switch. Good cast, Saskia Reeves dropping more glottal stops than a barrel load of cockney maaahnkeys, know wot I mean? Indira Verma as the long neglected wife of the super cool but fatally flawed hero, John Luther. Quirky name, I look forward to Zwingli of the Yard. By day an ecclesiastical reformer, by night taking out the scum of Zurich. It's a tough job but...back to last night.
Episode Two featured a cop-killer. Aggravated arrest (that is a new one). For some bizarre reason an ex Marine of 46 Commando (yes, we know, it only goes up to 45) was allowed to retain his Dress One uniform and a loaded rifle. Eating cold baked beans he plotted revenge. After slotting half a dozen of the thick blue line he is cornered by Luther. Does John kung-fu him? Does he pop a cap in his ass? Negative. He reminds Squaddie Junior that his Father laughed as he wet the bed. Efficient Killing Machine dissolves into tears and Luther punches him (well, he had killed six of his mates) and reminds us that 20% of the prison population were in Crossmaglen. Cue fade out music and Rambo...sorry I did not think I'd spend my 49th birthday doing this.
