I love my Rio Carbon, but it's designed to compete with the iPod mini which has 4 gigs (this one has 5 and more than twice as long of battery life). Oh and it's cheaper too :)
If you need something with more storage, this iRiver one is quite pimp.
I give it to Apple in that they have the best marketing, online music store, and user interface... but they're totally wack in every other respect.
I've listened to Rio's, iRiver's etc, and I think the iPod has a better sound quality... granted its hard to judge with such small earbuds, and its dependant on the file as well...

The latter is totally subjective, but with the first three, Mac doesn't have a leg to stand on.
