Prologue

The sun was shining brightly on a quaint apartment complex in Tokyo. The maintenance man was minding his own business as he patiently swept off a set of stairs. Since it was January the air was cold around him, even with the sun’s warmth, and he often had to ignore the laughter of children who lived in the apartment building. His furry hat with the ear flaps may have not been the "coolest" garment he owned, but it was certainly the warmest! Then there was that Miyavi fellow who lived in number 17, trying to offer him an "attractive hat." The nerve of some people!

On this day he was barely aware of his surroundings until he spotted a taxi pull into the parking lot. A young man stepped out of it and caused the maintenance man to shake his head. Speaking of that Miyavi fellow, this man looked like a friend of his or something. He had dyed his hair a honey blonde color, and it went out in all manner of directions, almost as though it had never been brushed before. He wore a visor that some of the hair fell over, and his clothes were like something akin to the Japanese street fashion the maintenance man was often scowling at when he went for a walk. Not only that, but this man seemed to be wearing make-up and his nails were painted black!

The maintenance man suddenly realized that the stranger was heading up the stairs he was sweeping. He moved up to the landing and eyed the man through narrowed eyes. "’Morning," said the stranger, giving a smile and half-wave as he passed by.

He continued up and the maintenance man said not a word as he continued to sweep…but now his curiosity was aroused. What was that hooligan doing? He darted up the stairs to see which door he went to and was not at all surprised that it was number 17. "So he is a friend of that Miyavi fellow…" he muttered, shaking his head and continuing back down the stairs, hoping they didn’t cause any mischief…

The stranger had a name, as you probably figured, and it was Maya; as Maya knocked on the door he whistled to himself and looked around at the surroundings of the apartment. There was an abundance of trees around it…was that a squirrel!?

The door opened and he turned his gaze from the squirrel to give a huge smile to the man in front of him, but his smile faded because it wasn’t the man he was expecting. Instead it was a very handsome tall man with dark hair, who showed off his rippling abs by wearing an unbuttoned shirt. "Hi," the man said, his tone friendly even if his eyes were curious. "Can I help you?"

Maya raised an eyebrow at the man. "Yeah, does someone named Miyavi live here?"

At that the other man grinned and Maya’s eyes bugged at the gruesome teeth flashed at him. How could someone who was so good-looking have such a mangled smile!? "Oh yes, come right in!" The man said, stepping aside and allowing Maya entrance. "Are you a friend of his or something?"

Maya walked in, immediately looking around at the insides of the little apartment. "You could say that," he chortled.

"I’ll just let him know you’re here," the man said before disappearing down a hallway.

Maya watched his ass as he walked away, thinking to himself that the dark-haired man was quite a catch, and wondering if that was Miyavi’s roommate or something. He didn’t have to wonder long, though, because he was the type of nosy person who has to peek in drawers and open cupboards when he visits people. As he wandered over to a movie cabinet he couldn’t help but spot the picture that sat atop it and he let out a startled gasp; it was the strange man with Miyavi, but they didn’t look like they were just hanging out, they looked like they were getting married!

"Hellooo-Maya-kun!?" Miyavi’s voice rang out all of a sudden.

Maya turned to look at his friend, who looked just as sexy as he always had, sans the shocked expression on his face that made him seem almost constipated. "Hi, Miyavi-kun, how are you?" Maya asked sweetly, making his way over to him and ignoring the good-looking man behind him.

"I’m fine, how are you?" Miyavi grinned widely.

"Who is this?" The other man asked, slipping his arms around Miyavi’s waist and resting his chin on one of his shoulders.

That drew another gasp from Maya and he put his hands on his hips. "Actually, I’m his boyfriend."

"Was my boyfriend," Miyavi said curtly.

"We never officially broke up!" Maya countered.

"We didn’t have to!" Miyavi grabbed the hands around his waist and clutched them tightly. "When you left me I moved back in with Sakito and then I found my true love. But what are you doing here?"

Maya felt a little shocked and a little betrayed. He didn’t really even hear Miyavi’s question, and answered it with one of his own. "How did you find your true love!?"

"It’s really a funny story," the nameless man said with a chuckle, kissing Miyavi’s cheek. "Have you ever heard of the Tokyo date doctor?"

Maya snorted. "Urban myth."

Miyavi shook his head vigorously. "No, no, no, he exists!" He pulled away from his apparent lover to go over to an end table and pull a photo album out from beneath it. He flipped through the pages until he came to one and showed it to Maya. "That’s him right there. He came to Toshiya and mine’s ‘wedding.’"

Maya gaped at Miyavi for even using that word, then looked down at the purple-haired man he was pointing to. He grabbed the photo album and flipped through it, becoming thoroughly disgusted at all the pictures from the "wedding." At last he shoved it back into Miyavi’s arms and exclaimed, "Well, this is impossible! We weren’t even apart for that long! You didn’t think I would come back? I love you, remember!?"

Miyavi sighed and set the book down on the couch before returning to Toshiya’s embrace. "I’m sorry, Maya, but I moved on. I thought you had so I didn’t see another choice."

Maya looked between the two of them once again, then said, "And what’s the name of this Tokyo Date Doctor?"

A minute later he left the apartment, slamming the door shut harshly. He found the maintenance man on the stairs and marched past him, snapping at him, "What are you looking at!?"

The maintenance man looked down and continued grumbling beneath his breath. Maya returned to his waiting taxi and slid inside. "Back to your place then?" The driver quipped, looking in the rearview mirror at him.

"Do you have a phone book in here?" Maya asked.

The driver picked one up off the seat beside him and handed it back to Maya, who took it and immediately opened up to the Ni section. "There’s been a change in my plans," he said, scanning over the names quickly. "I need to visit a Niikura Kaoru."

Notes: 1) YES, you read correctly! This would be Maya of LM.C, Aiji's new band. He also used to play the guitar for Miyavi. He was just waiting to be cast in "Hitch" and I have to say a thanks to kanayo for suggesting him because, truthfully, he hadn't even crossed my mind until she did (although he certainly should have!). Check out the cast list and you'll see that he's in there. I'M SO EXCITED! 8D
2) In Japan the phonebooks are not listed "alphabetically" like we're used to because they use hiragana, which come in a certain order like our own English alphabet. "Ni" would be the 22nd one, I do believe? But yeah, so that's why he opens the phone book to the "Ni" section instead of the "N" section. ;)
