December meme: Day 13!!!!

grammarwoman asks: BSG - what stays with you, where/if you think it went off the rails, the fandom, or whatever else comes to mind?

I've come to realize that reall all of BSG that I can stand (by and large) is the mini-series and the first few episodes of the first season (especially 33). That was when Ron Moore actually seemed to care about the story that BSG was always supposed to tell - how do these few humans survive under these circumstances? how do they make a society in which they can live? how do they meet the demands of all of these people with limited resources? Before he became infatuated with the hard-on he had for the Cylons.

There's such a great concept within BSG, and the show touched on it after the first few episodes a little bit, but then the stories fell by the wayside, instead focusing on the Cylons. And, if you want to tell the Cylon story? More power to you, but if that's the case, then don't start it as the Battlestar Galactica story about the PEOPLE.

That said, I do give them a LOT of credit for making Saul a cylon. Of course, the majority of that credit goes to Michael Hogan. He acted the shit out of that. Plus they lose all that credit for Leoben telling them that Adama was a cylon and then them chickening out of making one of them a cylon. ZAK SHOULD HAVE BEEN A CYLON, GODDAMNIT.

I think the writers didn't use stuff to their advantage. First of all, Grace Park was not a good choice to play Sharon. Not because she's not a good actor, but because she's not a good *enough* actor to pull off that variations that a cylon needs. Tricia Helfer was AMAZING at that as Six. And while I was never a huge Kara/Lee shipper, I think they totally fucked up the relationship with them. Not that I think they were a happily ever after, but the way they kept them apart and got them together was just an insult to the fans and to the characters. It was like they went "Well, I suppose we should reward all the people we've been teasing forever, but let's make it completely fucked up so that even their antagonism and friendship are messed up.

Ahem.

I have a lot of BSG feelings and, as much as I love a lot of stuff about it, sadly the memories I take from it are mostly bad ones.

And a seething hatred of Ron Moore.
