The U.S. Supreme Court today left the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance by a technicality that is sure to please none. The Court ruled 8-0 that Michael Newdow did not have the proper standing to bring the case on behalf of his daughter because he did not have legal custody. By its decision, the Court neither affirms nor denies to constitutionality of the disputed phrase, but leaves the ubiquitous pledge intact in its present form. The
Reuters article indicates that we will see this case again and that Newdow will now fight "this entire system" of child custody laws. It is upon those same laws that the Court ruled today.
