Me and Betty

Me and Betty

I wake past noon and two
To Portishead and slanting rain.
In royal boxers and mussed hair
I seek the world,
Or rather kitchen,
For that satisfying bowl of bitter milk.
Girlfriend smooth and white
Lies naked drinking kool-aid on the couch.
Downers make her wonder why she’s with me,
Then she catches my profile just right
In the refrigerator light.
She stands, smiles, bids me swim…

After, she watches me write
And dribbles cherry down my back.
She feels a need to be canvas,
And vodkas in the Mickey Mouse mug
Demand I play the pen.
So I spin her out, feel her adored,
And watch her dance on the coffee table.
Her eyes are lucid.
She doesn’t seem bothered
That I’m probably only writing us,
Modern Love, into a history
Soon stored in bathrooms and birdcages.

She just smiles and bids me swim.
