Jayne growled low in annoyance as he observed River across the cargo bay with her hands clamped relentlessly over the captain’s eyes. Mal looked like he was playing along, twisting and turning in a mock effort to learn his captor.

Just great, Jayne thought irritably. The salvage was waiting and Mr. normally all-business was wasting time entertaining the girl’s harebrained behaviors.

His discontentment had nothing to do with the fact the rutting girl was draped all over the captain like a liquored up whore.

There was a high-pitched squeal as River was outmaneuvered by Mal and caught firmly by the wrists. Using her free limbs, she retaliated, kicking at the captain’s shins as he danced backwards at every attempt to avoid a lashing from her steel-toed boots.

Jayne shook his head disapprovingly. Idiots. Slamming the last bit of equipment into the mule, he made sure to give the crate an extra bang or two for good measure. “Ya’ll done playin’?” The merc growled. “We gotta git ‘fore there’s nothin’ left be had.”

Mal looked River sternly in the eyes. “I’m gonna let go now. I trust we’re good and even then? Don‘t need a sneaky foot to my backside.”

River grinned slowly. “Ceasefire, Captain.”

Zoe walked past the spectacle, raising an eyebrow, but said nothing as she swung into the driver’s seat. Mal boarded beside her shaking his head, but smiling nonetheless.

River, flushed and happy climbed in next to Jayne, hardly noticing his stiff demeanor.

When the mule eased off, Jayne leaned in close, lowering his voice so only River could hear it. “You ain’t his type.” He challenged.

Turning slightly, River raised an eyebrow, amused. “Maybe.”

“He’s not going for it.” Jayne declared sternly, secretly bothered he just might.

Smiling quietly, River propped her leg up on the back of Zoe’s chair. Her dress fell smoothly away, reveling a whole mess of leg as she proceeded to adjust the leather strap high on her thigh. Gleaming knives against tender skin caught Jayne off-guard, erasing the sternness from his features.

“Already sold.” River countered, fingering the handles of the blades, danger sheathed in girlish pretence.

As Jayne’s eyes followed the seduction of her movements, his mind was immediately everywhere but hating her.

River rested her cheek on her still uncovered leg, purposely taunting as her eyes burned into Jayne’s lust-filled ones. “Now you can help me convince him.”
