Jayne waited. Spent half the morning timing it just right. He knew the girl would be coming up to pilot anytime now. Men like him didn’t go begging. He had to make it look natural. Moreover, he didn’t want anyone hear what he had to ask.

Sure enough, he caught sight of her coming down the corridor, light as a feather floating on the breeze. Stepping away from the wall, he tired to act casual. “Oh, hey there.”

After opening his mouth and then closing it for the umpteenth time, he mentally berated himself. “All right, girl. Just gonna come right out an’ say it.”

River looked up at him expectantly, still as grace. That stare could make a Reaver sweat.

Taking a deep breath, Jayne wiped his clammy palms against his pants and continued. “As a rule, I don’t generally fancy lil’ skinny things with buggy eyes that look half starved. ‘Specially ones that have more’n a few screws loose. Hell, we ain’t even got nothin’ in common ‘cept fer the work. Mebbie I’m just desperate, er catchin’ something, but, I was thinkin’ mebbie you an’ me could…”

“Stop.” River pleaded, looking at him like an ignoramus child. “Your wooing skills are something to be desired.”

“‘Cuse me?” The merc was confounded and a little flustered.

“You loathe my existence and desire it. Think you are confused. But mostly, very unromantic.”

Jayne was taken aback. Suddenly, he began to sputter choke on his own laughter. “Ya, think I was tryin’ ta court ya, Crazy?” After recovering from his fit of amusement, he corrected her. “Naw. I was just gonna ask if ya wanted ta help me do some book learnin’.

Rivers face dropped, embarrassment heating her flesh. “Much more logical a reason,” she muttered under her breath. It was foolish of her to assume it was more. Broken girls do not have rogue love adventures. Sidestepping him, she answered his request. “Tomorrow, 0700hrs. Bring a pencil.”

When she was gone, Jayne leaned against the ship’s wall and knocked his head back on it a few times. Damn, he thought. One of these days, he’d learn to get it right.
