Kathleen sighed as she loaded the last box at her local thrift store, it was finally done and she was ready to go start her new life. As Mandy came out to collect the boxes, she waved and said "I can't believe you're done! Are you nervous?"
Kathleen shook her head. "Not really, more curious than anything. I spent several summers and even a couple of Winter Star breaks at the farm, I feel more than anything, like I'm going home." Mandy smiled and said "Well, maybe I'll come visit you once you get settled. You've told me so many stories about the farm, I can kind of see it in my mind." "Please do, I would love to have guests! I am nervous, I have no idea who will be in the village now." Kathleen confessed, but Mandy hugged her and replied "You will make friends no problem, I just know it!"
"Thanks Mandy" she said, climbing back in the car and waving as she headed to her father's house to drop off the car, then she would head to the bus stop that would take her to Pelican Town. Glancing at her backpack and satchel that was filled with the few things, mostly clothes, that she would need, she felt excited and ready to start anew.
Just a couple of hours later, she was on the bus leaving the city, looking out the window at the rapidly changing scenery and her heart beating faster. She was browsing on her phone some articles about farming as this would be a completely new change for her. She had helped her grandfather but that was years ago and she would be doing everything herself, so she was kind of nervous about that.
Sooner than she thought, the bus was pulling up to a simple country road and a red haired woman was standing and waiting. Kathleen grabbed her bags and stepped off, unsure of where to go next. That's when the red haired lady approached. "Excuse me, are you Kathleen?" she asked, a relieved look passing over her face as Kathleen nodded. "Oh good, I've been sent to meet you by Mayor Lewis! I'm Robin, the local carpenter." she explained. "It's nice to meet you, Robin" Kathleen said, butterflies in her stomach.
Robin led the way to a big patch of land that was overgrown with weeds and rocks, but also seemed to be part of a forest, which brought back a couple of memories for Kathleen. She must have been lost in thought, for Robin gently touched her arm and reassured her that there was good land here and that she knew Kathleen could fix it up. Kathleen smiled and said "Thank you" and just then the door to the cabin opened and a somewhat familiar person appeared. "Kathleen, welcome!" Mayor Lewis said with a beaming smile. "Yoba, you have grown up so much! I remember you coming into town with your grandpa and helping him" he exclaimed, which not only brought tears to Kathleen's eyes but also made her smile. "Grandpa said to tell you hi" she replied, remembering his last letter.
That statement made Mayor Lewis smile fondly as he stepped down off the porch. "Your grandpa was such a vital member of this community! I'm sure you'll fill his shoes quite nicely." he stated. "So I think you should get some rest tonight and then tomorrow you should meet people. We have a thriving little community and they're all super excited to meet you!" Kathleen blushed but was excited and said "All right, I'll introduce myself tomorrow. Thanks for making sure everything was ready for me."
After the mayor and Robin had walked off, Kathleen went inside and right away a wave of nostalgia washed over her. She remembered sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor, getting a drink of water from the faucet, and listening to her grandpa's stories, as she carefully changed into her pajamas and slid under the covers she swore she could hear her grandpa saying "Welcome home".
