This is Awkward

Finn overhears Blaine and Kurt having sex and for some reason can't not listen (I'd prefer him not be turned on by either boy, just kind of awkward "If I do anything now they'll KNOW I was listening!").

Kurt says Finn's name and then it's over, Kurt is apologizing and Blaine is quietly, lovingly hushing him and telling him it's okay.

Finn privately freaks out, thinking Kurt is thinking about him during sex. He gets more and more awkward around Kurt until somehow it all comes out in an argument.

Turns out, "Finn" is their safe word. Blaine and Kurt are into orgasm denial and rimming and stuff and they use "Finn" to get the other person to stop.

So, it's not like he really meant to hear it. He doesn't expect that Kurt has anybody over, 'cause really, nobody had mentioned it. He stops on the first step down, once he hears the moaning. His eyes are wide and he's frozen stiff. He knows if he moves, the step will creak and they'll hear him, know that he heard them. So he stays put, waiting for something loud so he can go back upstairs.

"Finn!" Kurt shouts, breathless. Said boy's eyebrow shoot up and his face colors, half in embarrassment and half in anger. "Oh my God, Blaine, I'm so sorry," he continues after a few moments of silence, his voice hoarse. He sounds miserable (as he should be, Finn thinks) and Blaine quiets him.

"I understand, Kurt," he says softly. "It's okay. Really, it is," he continues. Finn is almost disgusted. How is anything like that okay? Kurt just keeps on apologizing and Blaine just keeps on comforting him. How is that okay? Shouldn't he be mad that Kurt said another guy's name while they were having sex. Finn figures they're wrapped up in the conversation too much to hear much else and he retreats. Thankfully, if they heard the step groan, they never pointed it out.

Finn now can't seem to bring himself to look at Kurt without feeling that tinge of awkwardness. Kurt, of course, is none the wiser and it's starting to make Finn mad. He doesn't want to say anything. He thinks that if he can just push it out of his mind, everything will be okay. It all just backfires one night at dinner.

"Finn, is there something wrong?" Carol asks over her plate of spaghetti. "You've been acting strange these past few days."

Finn shrugs, really not wanting to say anything. He shoves another forkful of noodles into his mouth.

"Yeah," Kurt chimes in. "You've been so much more.. awkward." Again, Finn just shrugs.

"Come on, honey. Is there something going on at school you need to tell us about?"

"No, Mom," he says, exasperated. "Just leave it alone, please?" Carol stares Finn down, her eyebrow arched.

"Don't you talk to me like that, young man. Out with it," she demands. Finn can't survive under that glowering stare of hers.

"I.. Sort of walked in on Kurt and Blaine having sex," he says quickly. (He doesn't mention the part about his name because, really, that's not her business.) Kurt chokes on his pasta.

"What now?" She replies intelligently. Kurt has never been happier to have his dad take the night shift. If he were here right now, Kurt's sure he'd have another heart attack.

"I'm not going to repeat it mom! I really just have to block it from my mind and you're not helping."

Meanwhile, Kurt's coughing up spaghetti and sauce and wishing he was dead under a rock. Dinner can't be over fast enough.

When it finally does end, after Kurt's finally managed to convince Carol that she 'really shouldn't tell Dad about this because he's sick and I'd hate for this to be the reason that he keels over for good', Kurt grabs Finn's shirtsleeve and pulls him down to his room.

"Why didn't you tell me, Finn?" He bites, his cheeks red. "I'm sorry that you had to.. Go through that, but why couldn't you tell me instead of being so.. so.. awkward about it?" Kurt throws his hands up in the air and sits down on his bed.

"It's not that easy, Kurt. Have you ever walked in on anybody when they're fucking? Let alone two guys?" He returns. Kurt glares at him.

"I thought we were past the homophobic remarks, Finn."

"Yeah, I thought so, too, until I heard you say my name."

Kurt's eyes go wide and he gulps. "I-i.." He blushes deeply. "No, Finn, it's really not what you think!"

Finn sits down on the couch, across from Kurt's bed and folds his arms over his chest. "Then what is it?"

"I can promise you that you really don't want to know, Finn. Just trust me that I wasn't calling your name, okay? I don't like you like that anymore," he pleads. The look on his face is enough for Finn to believe him. Still, the curiosity tugs at his mind. "No, trust me. You don't want to know."

"Finn, I need you to tell me what happened," his mom says, patting the bed next to her. Finn sighs and sits down.

"Really, it's nothing. It's already cleared up," he says, waving it off. Carol looks at him incredulously.

"Don't give me that, Finn. Now talk to me."

"Well.. You know that I walked in on them having sex.. And well.. Kurt said my name when he.. well.. you know," he forces it out, scratching his head nervously. "But it's not what you think! He's not into me! He won't tell me what it exactly meant, but he's not secretly.. like.. wanting me or anything. So it's okay! So can we drop it, please?" He rants, searching Carol's face for some sort of agreement.

"I'm going to talk to him about this, Finn. That may be a good enough answer for you, but it's not for me,"  she says. Finn's okay with that. Kurt and his mom are cool. They'll be able to have that conversation on their own because he really doesn't want to know.

Again, everything falls downhill at dinner again. This time, Burt's home. He notices the awkward air that seems to hang over all of their heads.

"Okay, there's something here you guys aren't telling me," he says, setting down his silverware. Kurt resists the urge to groan and looks down at his plate. "So help me, somebody's going to tell me."

"Finn sort of walked in on me and Blaine.. h-having sex," Kurt mumbles. He doesn't want to see Burt's reaction. It's silent. A loud, ringing, awkward silence that Kurt seems to be the king of.

"Pardon?" Is all Burt can muster.

"And he may or may not have said my name during that," Finn chimes in before he can stop himself. Kurt looks up at him, his face red.

"Finn!" He shouts, his eyes wide. Finn shrugs apologetically. Burt looks between them both and then to Carol, whose hand is on her forehead in exasperation.

"Explain." He says. Kurt shivers a bit at the tone.

"It's really not what you think! I promise.. I-i.."

"Kurt. Just say it," Carol says. She did end up talking to him and forcing the story out of him. No, she doesn't approve, but if they're comfortable..

"It's our safe word," he mumbles. Both Finn and Burt stare at him.

"What?" Burt says.

"'Finn' is our safe word. It's how.. W-well.." His face turns an even brighter shade of red and he looks down.

"So, not only is my son sexually active, but he's into.. that kind of stuff? When were you planning on telling me?"

"It's not exactly a subject that comes up in conversation easily, Dad!" Kurt says, in defense of himself. He picks at his nails nervously.

"I need a drink," Burt says, leaving the table. Kurt goes to his room, silently, leaving Finn to stare, wide-eyed at his mom, trying desperately to figure out what the hell a safe word is.

"Blaine, we need a new word," Kurt says one afternoon. His boyfriend looks up at him from the floor, an eyebrow raised.

"Why is that?" He muses, rolling on to his side, momentarily ignoring his homework.

"Finn overheard us and he thought I was actually calling his name. So.. We have to change it," he says in a rush, his face red. Blaine laughs.

"Alright then. What about 'Carol'?" He suggests. Kurt grabs his math notebook and throws it at Blaine's head.
