What an unrelentingly terrible day. I left for class this morning at a relatively early time for me, about 9:40 (for a 10:00 class) so that I wouldn't have to rush...that hope slowly ticked away as I stood at the bus stop awaiting an arrival. One bus went by in the other direction. A second. A third. Finally, I could hear one--wait, no, that was just a UPS truck. What can brown do for me? It can give me a ride to class, that's what. A fourth. UTS definitely ruins everything. I could probably blame at least half my frustrations about this place on the bus system alone. So unreliable. Anyway I finally got on a bus and got to class barely on time. Then there was the class part of the day, which is always kind of hazy in retrospect. After not going to chem in an attempt to preserve some remnant of sanity, I had lunch at Runk. Enough said on that subject. As I returned to my room, I found that the network had gone down and was continuing to do so intermittently. Fantastic. This was on the heels of our power going out the morning before. Along with the network. In combination with the course offering directory. But at least I could still look forward to registering for classes on the most reliable, user-friendly, and of course non-homicide-inducing of all systems, the delight of all UVa students, ISIS. Just as a precaution to make sure I'd have no hangups when I tried to register for real at my super-awesome time of 5:10pm, I logged onto that little sweetie and found a big red "Y" next to the heading of "Student Financial Services" below the words that I was just dying to hear: YOUR REGISTRATION HAS BEEN BLOCKED. Cool! That means I get to call my parents, give my mom some more things to freak about, have my dad yell at me because he doesn't know what the charge on my account is for because he's paid everything already, and get the run-around from several different University administrations! After about an hour of alternating calls between my dad, Student Financial Services, the Bookstore, and the Bursar's office, I reached the conclusion that this $58 charge was indeed for items I had purchased at the Bookstore and charged to my account, and that my dad had indeed paid it off, but that only $13 of the payment actually went to the Bookstore while the rest went to various other student fees that he apparently was not aware of, leaving a $58 charge between me and class registration. Awesome! That meant I could take a 5-mile trip to pay off my debt at Carruthers Hall, which is only literally the farthest University building from me! All I had to do was hop on the Blue Route to Carruthers, the last stop, and whip out some cash...oh wait, did I have that much cash on me? Of course not! To the ATM! At Newcomb! More waiting for buses! The fun half-hour ride finally brought me to my destination across from the Barracks shopping center, where I waited in lines of poor saps like myself who were also trying to clear their names. Was the Financial Services network working any better than ISIS? Can you guess by now? Oh boy, some good times were had in that office. Then, another 20 minute wait and 40 minute bus ride later, I was back at Hereford to register for my classes twenty minutes late. That being done, it was time for....the CALCULUS TEST! Sweet! I was SO prepared after my entire afternoon of straightening out what should have never been a problem in the first place. I mean, a whole twenty minutes of skimming a textbook does wonders when you were planning to study for a couple hours. The test was wonderful, too. I mean, I love taking tests--ones that I would do poorly on even under normal conditions and sufficient preparation--under ridiculous amounts of stress. It just makes me so happy. As the entire day generally did.
