Story
The first time you tried to leave, you hotwired one of the many cars abandoned haphazardly around the town. A dark blue Toyota, you were just glad it was automatic. You followed the road out of town, just as you’d followed it in, retracing the path you had taken just a day ago. Impossibly, unbelievably, it brought you back. No matter which turn you took, no matter which fork you chose, you always ended up right back where you started. As far as you know, the Toyota’s still sitting on the shoulder you left it after it ran out of gas.

The second time you tried to leave, you filled a backpack with bottles of water and individually wrapped packs of crackers. It took you a day to reach the forest. It took another to realize that you were lost in the trees, and another half day to get back out again. One more day’s trek, your hope slowly twisting to weary, resigned despair, brought you back to the broken down Toyota. Exhausted, dirty, and so hungry it felt like you had been gone far longer than you had, you stumbled the last three miles back into town.

The third time you took a boat. After three days lost at sea, battered by violent waves and a horrific storm that nearly capsized you twice, your boat knocked up on the shore, half a mile down the beach from Bell Pointe’s lighthouse.

It was then that you stopped trying. What was the point? You couldn’t get out, no one could get out, and a life in relative comfort, even among strangers, was better than dying in the woods or drowning in the ocean. It wasn’t a bad place. Not really. A little strange. A bit anachronistic. But all right.

Wasn’t it?
