a couple of things I thought about:
1)Another interesting possibility is having the parents be clueless, and the PCs be members of BPRD-style organization. But since all the higher-ups know is that there is possibly an artefact, and not the magnitude of either the artefact itself or the opposition, they are relatively junior/inexperienced members.

2)have the honest-looking servant be a minion of the demon, either in addition or instead of the other servant being a cultist. This will set the demon up as the more competent antagonist from the moment they find this out: his minions are much less obvious.

3)one of the things you could set up is the mansion having History. The aunt appears flighty because she is very resolutely Not Looking too closely at what's happening in the darker corners of the house: in actuality,for her, it is either ignoring this or descend into gibberring terror - she chose "ignore" a very long time ago.
