Background:I just want to make a note that, for the purposes of this RP, Eliwood will have an A-rank support with Ninian. I'll decide how to distribute his other two support conversations at a later date, depending on what other FE7 characters we may or may not get in the future (though I'm leaning toward a B-rank support with Hector).
In the south-central area of the continent of Elibe lies a confederation of small territories known as the Lycian League. Each of these territories is governed by a marquess. Eliwood is the son of Lord Elbert, the marquess of Pherae.
When Eliwood was a child, the marquesses all met in Ostia, the head of the Lycian League, for oath rites. While their parents were swearing loyalty to Lycia, the children, including Eliwood, were in another room. One of the lordlings, Erik of Laus, declared that the children should all take an oath of their own, and cut his hand to shake the hands of the other children. Very few of the children did the same, but Eliwood was one of the few. The boy he shook hands with was Hector, the second son of the marquess of Ostia. Since that day, Eliwood and Hector have been the best of friends and have come to each other's aid when the other needed it.
Eliwood grew up training in the sword. His primary instructor was Marcus, a knight of Pherae who had been knighted on the very day that Eliwood had been born. After he met Hector, he also began to spar every two months with him, and proved to be slightly better than his best friend (Eliwood recalls that out of 30 matches with Hector, he won 14, lost 12, and drew even four times).
When Eliwood was 16, the Lycian territory of Caelin erupted into a violent inheritance dispute. Lord Hausen, the marquess of Caelin, had fallen ill due to a poison that was being slipped into his meals by his own brother, Lundgren, and had wished to reconcile with his estranged daughter, Madelyn, who had eloped with a nomad to live on the plains of Sacae. Unfortunately, word came saying that his daughter had died in a bandit attack. However, Madelyn had had a daughter of her own. Her name was Lyndis, the same name of Hausen's late wife. Hausen had sent two of his knights to meet Lyn and bring her to meet him. Lundgren, however, would have none of it, expecting Hausen to name Lyn his successor, and sent out troops to stop her. During her travels, Lyn ran into Eliwood.
Lyn had come across two siblings who were being picked on by an organization known as the Black Fang. Lyn could not let such actions go, so she came to their aid. However, she was too late to rescue the sister, Ninian, but a few minutes after Lyn realized this, Eliwood showed up with an unconscious Ninian in his arms. He had intercepted the men who had taken her away and rescued her.
Eliwood would be called on by Lyn once more. As she drew closer to Caelin, Lundgren began to spread the rumor that Lyn was an impostor and that the two Caelin knights with her were traitors. Using this lie, Lundgren petitioned the surrounding territories for reinforcements. Eliwood, however, on Lyn's request, convinced all of the neighboring territories to remain neutral and let Caelin sort out its own affairs. This effort allowed Lyn to meet and kill Lundgren on the field of battle and meet and nurse her grandfather back to health.
Approximately a year after the Caelin inheritance dispute was resolved, Lord Elbert left Pherae with a regiment of his finest knights for whereabouts unknown. However, a month had passed with no word from the marquess. Confident that his father was alive, Eliwood left with Marcus and a small group. Along the way, he rescued a village from bandits, and in speaking with the village magistrate, learned of something ill afoot.
Lord Darin, the marquess of Laus, had begun preparing for war. He had even gone so far as to ignore reports of bandit attacks on the villages in his domain in order to continue expanding the war machine. Suspicious that Darin made to wage war against another Lycian territory, Eliwood made Laus his next destination, passing through Santaruz along the way. However, in Santaruz, Eliwood and his band were attacked by mercenaries. Fortunately, they were aided by Hector, who had slipped away from Ostia to join Eliwood on his search for his father. The two arrived at Castle Santaruz, only to find that the marquess, Lord Helman, was mortally wounded. In his last moments, Helman gave Eliwood and Hector two pieces of advice. The first piece of advice was to go to Laus: "Darin, the marquess of Laus, knows all." The second piece of advice was "Beware the Black Fang."
When Eliwood and Hector reached Laus, they were met by Erik. Erik attempted to put on a friendly facade to lull Eliwood into a false sense of security, but Eliwood saw through the trap. After a brief battle that ended in Eliwood's favor, Eliwood and Hector examined the castle but found no sign of Darin. They then interrogated Erik, who told them what he knew.
A year ago, Darin had met a mysterious man named Ephidel. Ever since that meeting, Darin has prepared to rebel against Ostia and establish himself as the king of Lycia. He sent letters to the other marquesses, and two marquesses that answered his letters were Helman and Elbert. Elbert then traveled to Laus to talk to Darin and got into a heated argument with him. After he left, he disappeared.
Eliwood and Hector were shocked. Neither could believe that Elbert would endorse rebellion. They vowed to find Elbert and get to the truth of the matter.
After five days of occupying Castle Laus, word came from the east that Darin's forces had overrun Caelin. Feeling responsible for Darin's actions due to driving him out of Laus, Eliwood and Hector rushed to Caelin's aid. They met up with Lyn, who had escaped the castle, and then cleared a path to the castle, where Hausen was trapped. In the castle, they met Leila, an Ostian spy who had infiltrated the Black Fang.
Leila then bestowed what she knew on the three lordlings. She explained that the Black Fang was an organization of assassins based in Bern. For years, they had only targeted corrupt nobles, but the organization had changed completely once its leader, Brendan Reed, remarried. Now, the Fang worked to do the bidding of a man named Nergal, who was operating through Brendan's wife. She also knew it had been the Fang that had given Darin the idea of rebellion. Leila then told them that Elbert was alive. He was in a place called the Dragon's Gate, located on Valor, an island off the Lycian coast. This island had become known as the "Dread Isle" since no one who had ever set foot on the isle returned alive. This was not enough to deter Eliwood, Hector, and Lyn, and so they set out for Valor.
While at sea, they encountered a small boat. In this boat was Ninian. However, Ninian was unconscious, and when she came to, was unable to remember what had happened to her in recent days. Taking her under their care, Eliwood and his group arrived at Valor, and did battle with and killed Darin. They then went in deeper, and found out why the structure was called the Dragon's Gate.
Nine hundred eighty years before the present time, a massive war had been fought between humans and dragons. This war was known as the Scouring, and resulted in the dragons being banished from Elibe. The dragons had passed through the Dragon's Gate into another world, and Nergal wished to call forth dragons from the gate. He reclaimed Ninian, who had escaped his grasp days earlier, and tried to use her to call the dragons out. However, Ninian's brother, Nils, then arrived and was able to break the hypnosis Nergal had placed on Ninian. This, combined with a surprise strike from Elbert, left Nergal in bad shape. Nergal was forced to flee, but not before mortally wounding Elbert. Elbert would die in his son's arms.
With a heavy heart, Eliwood trudged back to the mainland, where he met with Uther, Hector's brother and Ostia's new marquess. Uther told them about suspicious activity in Bern, but told them to go west, in the opposite direction, to meet the "living legend." Uther was referring to the archsage Athos, one of the Eight Heroes of the Scouring and one of only two of those eight heroes still alive.
Around this time, Eliwood was able to get a good grasp on Nergal's goals thanks to Nils and Ninian. Nergal was after quintessence, the energy of life. Using quintessence, Nergal could prolong his life and heal serious injuries in no time. However, anything that he drained quintessence from would die. Nergal hoped to claim the quintessence of a dragon to gain tremendous power, but failing that, he set up a contingency plan by sowing the seeds for rebellion in Lycia.
After speaking with Athos, Eliwood and his group were warped by the archsage to Pherae, from where they traveled into Bern discreetly. Their goal was the Shrine of Seals, where another of the Eight Heroes, Bramimond, awaited. Hellene, the queen of Bern, knew the whereabouts of the shrine, but before she would divulge that information, she wanted a favor. The Fire Emblem, a national treasure of Bern, had been stolen, and without it, her son, Prince Zephiel, would not be able to partake in the ascension ceremony to be named successor to the throne. Eliwood and his group successfully retrieved the Fire Emblem and saved Zephiel from an assassination attempt, and Hellene gave Eliwood the information he sought.
At the Shrine of Seals, Eliwood was able to convince Bramimond to undo the seals on the eight legendary weapons of the heroes. However, while there, Nergal tracked them down and took Ninian away. This upset Eliwood, but he had no choice but to move on.
Eliwood was then taken by Athos to a cave in a remote region of Lycia. In this cave, Eliwood passed a trial and found himself in possession of the blazing sword of the hero Roland, Durandal. Hector, meanwhile, was in the Western Isles retrieving Durban's thunder axe, Armads. After acquiring the weapons, however, an ice dragon appeared. Letting the blade guide him, Eliwood slew the dragon with Durandal. After that, Nergal appeared, seeking to claim Nils, and Eliwood demanded to know what he'd done with Ninian. Nergal, in response, pointed out the dragon Eliwood had just attacked. Slowly, it shrunk into the form of the woman Eliwood loved. Ninian's secret was out--she and her brother were dragons called forth from the Dragon's Gate by Nergal. Ninian died in Eliwood's arms.
Devastated, Eliwood moved to Ostia with Hector, Lyn, and Athos. While there, they received a message from Nergal, who was waiting for them on Valor. Once again, Eliwood, Hector, and Lyn traveled to Valor and made their way to the Dragon's Gate. There, they fought Nergal and, with the help of the weapons of the Eight Heroes, ended his life.
The war was not over, though. In his death throes, Nergal had opened the Dragon's Gate and called forth three fire dragons. Fortunately, though, Bramimond had gathered all of the weapons of the Eight Heroes and used their combined power to resurrect Ninian, who then used her powers to repel two of the dragons. Eliwood then led his group into battle against the final dragon and succeeded in stopping it.
As the battle ended, Athos collapsed. He had reached the end of his long, long life. Before he died, however, he left a prophecy: "An evil star shines in Bern. But once again, Lycia brings hope." With that, he breathed his last.
Eliwood then prepared to say his farewells to Nils and Ninian. However, after some discussion, Ninian decided to remain in Elibe by Eliwood's side. Nils went through the Dragon's Gate alone, and Eliwood and Ninian returned to Elibe. Approximately a year later, Eliwood was officially named the marquess of Pherae, and he and Ninian were engaged. This is the point I'll be pulling Eliwood from.
Personality:Eliwood is everything a noble should be. He is virtuous, just, and kind. He cannot let a person in need go unaided, as is proven time and again with Nils and Ninian, as well as the first time he meets Merlinus. He is also fiercely loyal to those he cares about, and when someone disappears or dies, Eliwood takes it very hard, usually blaming himself for being unable to save them.
Eliwood also hates war. He says himself that, as long as he focuses only on the enemy or enemies before him, he will be fine. However, he loses some of his will to fight whenever he thinks of his foes' loved ones and other innocents that would be affected by the death and destruction. He would much rather negotiate everything as peacefully as possible.
This is not to say, however, that Eliwood is a weak fighter. In fact, the opposite is true. Eliwood is a remarkably talented swordsman. In school, he used to get much praise for his swordsmanship and his riding skills. He can use lances as well as swords, but he tends to prefer the former weapon type. He also has a strong sense of justice and can go into a righteous fury under the right circumstances--usually when provoked by Nergal.
Romance is also part of Eliwood's character. Eliwood is susceptible to a pretty face, and can react to the idea of getting involved in a relationship with a beautiful girl with mild embarrassment. A good example of this is when Hector asked Eliwood whether or not Lyn was a beauty (this was before Hector met Lyn). Eliwood had a hard time responding, which left him wide open for Hector to tease. However, Eliwood is quite capable of being a mature gentleman. This is especially true with his dealings with Ninian. And when Eliwood does fall in love, there is nothing he will not do for the object of his affections. In Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi, in a level B support conversation between Marcus and Lilina, the former tells the latter that, when Eliwood was still recently married, he once disappeared for three days and returned with his wife's favorite flower, which only grew in a remote mountain area.
