“Let’s go on a date.” Ryou blinked up at the boy seated opposite of him, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. It seemed like his friend was in the mood to play around again. So much for a quiet evening spent studying in the library. Saeki was horrible to deal with on those days.

“Nope, sorry. Atsushi’s coming home during the holidays and I’m not doing anything before exams aren’t over.” That excuse usually worked when any of the boys tried to rope him into some random teenage stupidity, and surely it wouldn’t fail against his best friend either. It never did. Only, the grin that was spreading on the other’s face spoke volumes about how many retorts he had managed to come up with as a counter to Ryou’s never-fail alibi.

“Then let’s just take him along. I’ve always wanted two beauties to escort by my side.” Ryou was sorely tempted to aim a kick at his shin for that comment, regardless of if it was meant in jest or not. Really, this was getting ridiculous. Didn’t Saeki have a girlfriend to pick on?

“Why don’t you try asking Mari-chan out for a change? I’m sure she would bounce like Ken-chan out of happiness.” Ryou might have been imagining things, but there definitely was a shadow passing over his friend’s face at that comment, almost instantly making him regret that he had said something. In fact, he did not even need to hear Saeki say “We broke up on Tuesday.” To know what was wrong.

‘Again?’ he almost asked, instead biting on the inside of his lips. True, Saeki was terribly popular with the ladies, but somehow his relationships never seemed to work out. Never mind how he could charm about anything that came his way - hell, Saeki could probably charm Ryou himself if he ever set his mind to it - but it only ever seemed to last until a few dates in. Clearly his friend needed help. “You totally need a dating tutor.” Ryou finally muttered, going back to chewing on his pen. He still had some math problems to solve, and the library was closing soon.

Neither of them liked being holed up inside the dark and stuffy building, but it was their last year of high school, and getting good grades was essential for being able to enter a decent university. Personally Ryou would prefer staying a beach bum for all his life, and he was sure at least half of his friends would agree, but sadly their parents had other ideas. “We should go hang out on the beach again when exams are over.”

“So you do want to go on a date.” Ryou nearly snorted at the way Saeki beamed at him, he probably should have seen that one coming.

“We can even make it an ice cream date.” His friend continued upon seeing the long-haired boy’s reaction, likely well aware how much Ryou was not fond of the idea of dating, much less his best friend.

Ryou did snort then, setting his pen back down. “How about you may buy me ice cream and I might forget that you’re being an idiot?”

“How cruel, Ryou-chan.” The fake pout Saeki aimed at him was almost as ridiculous as the notion that they should go on a date.

-

Ryou had been working for maybe twenty minutes when Saeki spoke up again, almost causing him to drop his pen. “Are you sure you don’t want that date? I bet I’d be more entertaining that Minako-chan was.” The grin on his friend’s face spoke volumes about how he had just been waiting for Ryou to get absorbed in his work enough so he could be startled out of it.

“Quite sure, I have no interest in being wooed by you, rest assured.” Ryou set his pen down with a sigh. “Now will you please give it a rest? I’m trying to work here.” Not that he actually believed Saeki would leave it, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t try to get him to stop.

“But girls need to be properly captivated by their knight in shining armour.” That was definitely a I’m-going-to-tease-you-until-you-give-in grin his friend was wearing now, prompting a well-aimed kick to the shin by Ryou’s foot.

“If you don’t shut up about the ‘Ryou’s a girl’ thing I’m going to kick your ass into next Sunday.” Just because he had long hair it didn’t mean he was a girl damn it! “Alternatively I can kick your ass in tennis and you can woe about being beaten by a girl. Besides-“

Another complaint was on its way to leave Ryou’s lips when suddenly the lights flickered, blinked, and finally went out, leaving them both in complete darkness.

“Uh. Ryou, weren’t you watching the time?” Saeki’s voice came through the darkness, leaving Ryou with a terrible inkling.

“My phone says it’s only fifteen past nine, they are open until ten though.” Hadn’t he been late to school this morning because his clock had been running slow? But he had fixed it then, hadn’t he? Or maybe he had forgot, being distracted by classes and trying to explain why he was late when their teacher was going through what would be covered in their exams. But he wasn’t that forgetful, was he?

His suspicions were confirmed, however, when Saeki’s phone flashed on the other side of the table. “It’s already way past ten Ryou.”

He groaned, his head meeting the table with an audible ‘thud’. They had actually been locked into the library of all places? That was so absurd it was almost funny, except Ryou did not feel like laughing right now at all. “Why didn’t you say something?”

Ryou had predicted Saeki’s snort even before he heard it. “Yes, well. Your clock seemed to be working perfectly fine, so I obviously didn’t think to double-check.”

As much as he hated to admit it, Saeki had a point. It was his fault they were locked in here, and he couldn’t even deny it. “We should go to the front, see if anyone’s here still, maybe.” Ryou muttered, head still connected to the table. It would be completely pointless, if the lights were off it meant the last person had already left, and none of the exits would be open still. How could he have been stupid enough to forget to reset his clock?

There were a few moments of silence and then he heard the rustle of clothes as Saeki moved, apparently to his side of the table, tugging at his arm. “Let’s go check.”

It was barely possible to see where he was going, the moonlight shining in from the outside only sporadic and clouded, and he was sure it was no better for his friend, judging from the careful steps he was taking. They were lucky they hadn’t been far into the library in the first place, or there would likely have been an abundance of knocking into bookshelves, tables and whatever else could be placed in their way.

“Somehow this is all your fault, I just haven’t figured out how, yet.” Ryou grumbled, holding on to the back of Saeki’s shirt as his friend attempted to find his way through the dark. “But when I do I’ll make sure to pay you back for it.”

“I’ll accept payment in form of a date if you’re that eager.” Saeki replied, humour in his voice just as they finally reached the exit. The moment of joy - interrupted by a thwack to Saeki’s shoulder for the comment - was short lived though, as neither pushing or pulling would budge the door.

“Oh hell, can’t you just call someone?” Ryou muttered, resisting the urge to kick at the door. It wouldn’t do to break it, even if he really did not fancy the idea of being locked up inside a stuffy library.

“In case you forgot, neither of our phones has reception in here.” Ryou knew Saeki was shrugging at him without even seeing it for himself. The guy was just too easy going for his own good. “Might was well wait here until someone comes or when they open up tomorrow morning.”

There was another soft tug at his arm and soon Saeki was leading him off to the room’s corner, motioning him to sit down there with him. Ryou still remembered how they used to sit there all day and read while they were still in middle school. Well, there wasn’t any reading to be done in darkness.

“I’ll still pay you back for this.” Ryou muttered.

-

They must have been sitting there for an hour or more when Saeki spoke up again, Ryou had already been dozing off, his head resting against the knees he had pulled up to his chest. Better to sleep than to yell at a door that won’t open anyway, he had concluded. But of course Saeki had to interrupt him.

“Have you ever kissed, Ryou?” The question startled the boy in question more than Saeki had probably assumed, but he hid it well, just blinking open an eye to look up at his friend.

“Don’t be stupid, of course I have. I was still dating Minako-chan a month ago, remember?” Granted, the girl had broken up with him because he rarely showed his affection, but they had kissed before. He couldn’t see Saeki’s face in the darkness, but for some reason he has a feeling his friend is grinning at him. Again.

Saeki always grins a very special and (in Ryou’s opinion) idiotic smile when he says something his friend finds particularly amusing. “Was that a real kiss, or just a peck on the lips?” There was something in Saeki’s voice that made him very weary of answering the question. Why did he even want to know something that intimate was a mystery to Ryou, but thinking about it made his face flush, and knowing Saeki he probably knew about that was well.

“I fail to see where’s the difference, a kiss is a kiss.”

Apparently that was where he was wrong, according to Saeki, as his words were promptly followed by a snort and a poke into his side. Ryou squeaked. “And this, my friend, is why people think you are terribly naïve. I think I’m inclined to agree.”

Ryou barely had time to mutter a “Yeah well, other people suck.” Before his chin was suddenly tipped up and he could feel Saeki’s breath fanning over his face? What the hell?

“What the hell are you-“ Ryou began, only to be rudely interrupted by his friend. “I think I need to educate you a little.”

And that was when he could feel his best friend’s lips descend on his own. No, correction, that was when he could feel his best friend kiss him.

He must have been wearing a fairly dumbfounded expression when Saeki pulled away; lucky that the darkness was concealing most of it. His lips were still tingling from the soft pressure his friend had applied, and holding his breath it seemed to him his heart might jump out of his throat anytime soon.

“That’s not funny, Sa-“ Again he was interrupted, a weird feeling in his chest, because Saeki was still so close and he could almost feel every word spoken, breath hitching when his friend twined their hands together.

“See, that was a peck. Now let me show you what a kiss feels like.”

Ryou had a faint feeling of dread run through him at that, but before he could even utter another word Saeki had already leaned in again, stealing his lips into the most shameless kind of kiss he must ever have experienced.

No, he thought somewhere in the back of his mind, Saeki didn’t steal it. Ryou let him have it.

It was like a bad plot device in one of the weird manga Saeki’s sister had hidden away in her home - naturally with having a younger brother they hadn’t been hidden for long - except it was really happening to him right now, and he did not even try to resist.

Why were they kissing? Did it even matter? It shouldn’t, not with his sinfully good it felt having Saeki move over to straddle his hips, tongues brushing against each other, the other boy coaxing Ryou into playing with him - a completely different game from tennis, but no less fulfilling.

There was something that almost felt like a pang of disappointment in Ryou’s chest when Saeki finally pulled away, arms still braced against the wall behind him. His breath was ragged, and his lips felt far too swollen to be comfortable, yet somehow he found himself wishing his friend would lean in again.

“Do you-“ Saeki began and Ryou could feel the other boy’s breath hot against his lips.

And that was when the lights suddenly flicked on again, leaving him to stare right into his best friend’s eyes. His best friend whom he had just practically made out with.

Their parent’s voices could be heard calling out to them, they had probably gone looking after neither had returned home - of course the first place to search would be the library. Saeki grinned at him.

Ryou could feel the redness rising in his cheeks.

“I… guess you can have that date.”

The twinkle in Saeki’s eyes, however, told him he’d be demanding much more than just a date.

And maybe, just maybe Ryou wouldn’t even mind.
