A little help from my computer savvy friends, please?

Here's the sitch ... on Friday evening I attempted to scan some pictures into my computer ... when I launched the HP Imaging software, an "Internet Explorer Script Error" window popped up ... it detailed the line at which this error occurred and then said "do you want to continue running scripts on this page? Yes/No" ... no matter which button I pushed, the program would not function. It just had the basic background window for the program, but you couldn't access any of the functions within the program (i.e. scanning, copying, etc). I thought the program might have gotten corrupted because I had been having to have the CD in a drive in order to use the program (I hadn't had time to try and troubleshoot why that was the case). I uninstalled the software and then reinstalled in, but got the same results. So I thought I might have a virus, so I attempted to launch Norton AntiVirus (NAV) ... with the same results. So now I uninstalled NAV and Internet Security (NIS) (both had problems) ... when I finally was successful at that, I couldn't register or activate the products. I wasn't getting a script error ... in fact, until this evening I wasn't getting any errors at all. Tonight, NIS said there was an internal error and I had to reinstall the software ... which is what I'm doing right now (I'm writing this from my laptop). Anyway, when I wasn't able to register/activate those products, I checked all my internet connection settings ... everything appeared to be in order (I can access email, windows updates were downloading, LiveUpdate files were updating, etc) ... so I opened up a browser window to try and research what the issue was ... I can't get a page to load in either IE or Mozilla. So now I'm at a total loss. I looked on Microsoft's website and it said I needed to uninstall and reinstall IE6, but I can't seem to determine how that can be done in WinXP. I have tried everything they suggested on their site, but to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas? If you need more info on my system setup just let me know.
