The reason Sherlock had not told that story to John was because he didn't see the point; he had tried something, his plans had failed
and so there had no been consequences.
But sometimes, and specially since the "Mary incident" happened, John would get so sad and so angry and went too deep into his own
vat of depression that any of these very infrequent and dark mood would easily rival any of his own "black moods".
His hands were still tender and so he could not play the violin, which was why he decided to do an experiment; was John listening when
he got into this mood or he was in his own world? Was a distraction as effective in John as was in Sherlock's case?
Time to test the theory.
"Once, I tried to let you know I was alive"
Some minutes passed until he got the awaited reply
"I'm sorry, what?"
Yes, he tried to tell him. Yes, shortly after his "death". And well of course John didn't really win those plane tickets to Switzerland!
Of course it was way of getting him away from London and the danger and letting him know what was really happening.
Sherlock knows that to John, that was a mildly pleasant trip and nothing more.
