Author's Notes: I love this prompt and I think I’m happy with this, though I’m sure there’s room for improvement-
It had been sometime since I last accepted a quick job like this, but it was an easy pay and the winter was raw, so I didn’t hesitate much.

It was a cold night in the city and I was supposed to take out only one of the two gentlemen. I wanted to go and be with my child, I had promise to tell him a story before his mother would send him to sleep so I hurried to be in position to strike, waiting near the river so I could dispose of the body quickly.

My target, however, seemed to be having a good time with the other gentlemen because midnight came and went and only when it started snowing they had the decency to exit the place.

When I was readjusting the weapon with which I had decided to attack, some thugs approached my victim and his friend. Immediately, they assume a defensive stance and went to give a display of coordination and good aim with fists and walking sticks, but when it seemed like it’ll be over soon, one was tipped over the railing by a well placed punch to the temple.

The other man heard the splash and it seemed like he knew what had happened without even turning around, and in less than 40 seconds he had rendered both remaining attackers unconscious, had thrown himself to the river and was hauling the unconscious bleeding man to shore.

I had descended to the river bank too, approaching quietly to get a better view, but when the man saw me and the moonlight took a glint off my gun, he turned completely, facing me defensively; as if he could do something, as if he wasn’t on his knees and only one hand to defend himself because the other was hovering on the face of the beaten man, no doubt waiting to see if the other was breathing.

I nearly laugh at the stance but then he turned completely around and stood up.

And I realized that although I was the one with the weapon, he was the one with the menace, warning me to stay away and after a second of hesitance I turned back.

I was no match for a wolf with a clear promise of death and ruin in cold grey eyes.

The shouting and the pleadings reached my ears even after I had passed some streets and the constabulary whistle was soon heard. Perhaps the job was already done.

In any case, my son was waiting for me.
