Author's Notes: No money being made. And it's bizarre because this fill started out as a love story and somehow, evolved into this...
The search for little Arnaud and his captors had been going on for some eight hours now and my friend was beginning to feel the weather and the weight of the hunting gear with which we were equipped.
I knew the dampness and the cold were a cruel combination for his shoulder and I calculated another two hours before I was forced to make up some excuse to send the doctor back, who had been stumbling for the last hour, though that plan, without a horse to take him to safety, was a easily fallible one.
I was already making up the excuse when suddenly, I heard Watson give a surprised cry. I stop at once, corroborating he was alright- he didn’t appear any worse than some minutes ago, just paler-
-Holmes, tell me you can see it- asked me a frightened John Watson, taking my hand and pointing to the right.- Tell me you can see her too.
Ahead, in a strange clearing, there was a wrecked piano, with a tree growing exactly in the middle of it. It appeared to be holding it together. However strange a sight, I couldn’t discern a female figure of any kind. I turned to look at my friend who apparently was making an effort not to turn to the clearing.
-I see the piano with a tree growing in the middle- I said slowly. Watson kept looking at me, anxious for the rest of the sentence- But I can’t… what do you see?-
-I…nothing. I see nothing. Let us continue, my eyes must have been playing tricks on me and little Arnaud must be cold and scared - He tried to step away but I refused to let him. There was something extremely wrong with my friend.
-Tell me. Look me in the eye and tell me what you see, John! - I grabbed his shoulders and shook him slightly. He closed his eyes and opened them, green lakes fixed on me.
-I…Mary. I can see Mary standind by the piano.
