Thanks, ask_tiresias. You've really made my day.
Comment on this entry, then I'll give you a letter which you'll then pick ten words starting with and share with the class what they mean to you" game. I'll also be giving out letters, should anyone choose to request such an assignment by making comment on this bit of dictionary whimsy.
Vampire-What becomes of the Goth who doesn’t look good in a swimsuit and hasn’t yet achieved satisfactory retribution regarding his or her parents. What this means to me? The way I met my wife, a great deal of my friends, and still my #1 hobby. I've had a great time with it, and gone to places I honestly otherwise would not have gone to.
Vendetta:A feud between two families or clans that arises out of a slaying and is perpetuated by retaliatory acts of revenge; a blood feud. I like the word because it's arguably in my top 10 graphic novels ever, as V for Vendetta. It's also a nice Italian word, and I love the sound of it. The concepts expressed in the comic were definitely some of Moore's best.
Vice: 1. A two-jawed clamp used to hold tools or work in place. Hand vices typically hold smaller tools . Bench vices are used to hold stakes for forming. 2. Frailty: moral weakness. I included the first one because it contained the words stakes and forming. But I have a nasty vice, and that's smoking. I really need to quit, but I really do enjoy the act, so it's been difficult to part with. I enjoy it thoroughly.
Victory: Success, usually military oriented. Basically, it means you've won, or win. I am personally fiercely competitive, and I love to win. Perhaps it's my vice to want to be victorious. Regardless, it's another great word that I take personal stock in. I hope we can achieve victory in a campaign for global understanding and awareness, at the very least, and it's something I've been trying to promote.
Vader--Without a doubt, the baddest mofo in the galaxy. A Dark Lord of the Sith, trained by Obi-Wan, I mean, how can you go wrong? I used to look up to him as a child. His voice(not David Prowse) was something that would get me into working in voice-overs as a teenager. James Earl Jones even sent me a congratulatory letter when I made Eagle Scout. I have always loved Vader, and I think I always will. Except for yelling "NOOOOOO!"
Veritas Aequitas: Literally, "Truth Justice". Fundamentals we should all aspire to. To quote Boondock Saints, "These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace." I try very hard to aspire to these noble ideals.
Villain: A villain is a bad person, especially in fiction. Villains are the fictional characters, or perhaps fictionalized characters, in drama and melodrama who do evil deliberately and work against the hero. As such, villains are an almost inevitable plot device, and more than the heroes, the villains are the crucial elements upon which plots turn. Going along with Vader on this one. Dr. Evil, Goldfinger, The Joker, Sinestro...these are the characters that help illustrate why the hero is actually heroic. Heroes would be nothings without the Villains that give them the opportunity to be who they are meant to be. Villains give purpose to the good in the world.
Vanquish: To defeat, or to come out better in a conflict. A beautiful word, a word that sounds so much better than, "I beat him". Vanquished has finality, a decided sound. It's also the name of a really HAWT car I would love to own one day. Bond had one for a movie, and it was beautiful(except for the disappearing part).
Valor: the qualities of a hero or heroine; exceptional or heroic courage when facing danger (especially in battle); "he showed great heroism in battle"; "he received a medal for valor." Another thing I aspire to have. Heroes have had a great influence on my life: I really want to be one someday. Not a superhero, just a hero. Valor is a big part of that, and if/when presented with the situation, I hope to be able to live up to it.
Venerable: It means old. It's something that I want to be one day. I had a dream once that I was playing with my grandchildren, giving one of them a piggy-back ride, then I told them to go outside. I laid down on the couch, fell asleep, and went quite peacefully. For a long time, I was of the belief I was going to die at a young age(various reasons, plz don't ask). As I approach my 27th birthday, I have a profound longing to cram as many years into this life as I can. I want to pass on wisdom and advice. I want to take my grandkids to see the movies their parents don't want them to see. I want to get them hopped up on sugar and send them home to my children. =P Most of all, I wanna grow old with my wife.
This announcement has been brought to you by the letter V, and the number 42, which is always the answer.
