LJ Idol, Season 10 - Week 7: Where I'm From

Jan 30, 2017 14:11

I'm the short end of a long story.

I'm from what used to be Czechoslovakia,
back before the great divide.

My grandparents survived the Holocaust -
they spent time in a concentration camp,
concentrating very hard on survival.
He was a bookkeeper, she a seamstress.

Together they lived and loved,
and left.

They journeyed to Israel, to safety and succor.
My mother and uncle were born there.
It must have been a difficult life,
but better than the camps.

Together they lived and loved,
and left.

They journeyed to the land of opportunity.
My mother was five, her brother a little older.
They landed in New York, and worked and prayed.
Hoping for something better.

My mother was fifteen when a seed got planted,
and I was the result.

I lived, and although she loved,
she left.

I'm the short end of a long story -
there will be no children from my womb,
but I have lived and loved -
what's left?
