They woke him up at seven AM, as per usual. As he was dressed and showered, Nurse Helen cheerfully announced that he had a visitor. "It's your friend Katherine," she said while shampooing his hair. "She'll be here at nine, so there's plenty of time. Now let's get you dry and presentable, shall we?"
Two hours later, he was wheeled out into the waiting room. Kitty was wearing a green shirt and a ponytail and her smile was bright and wide.
"Kurt!" She hugged him and he stroked her hair as well as he could. "You can move that arm now! That's wonderful!" He smiled. His Katzchen.
She wheeled him out into the garden while telling him about the things going on at the mansion. "Emma and Scott's kid is getting bigger. I'm telling you, Emma is like a completely different person these days. It's all about her little boy. She'll hiss at anyone who looks at him the wrong way. OK, so maybe she's not that different." She laughed and Kurt smiled. "Uhm..." She ran her hand through her hair and stared intently at the magnolias."Oh yeah, there's been rumors...that he's back."
Kurt's eyes widened and his smile died away. "Lo..."
"Yeah," Kitty whispered, then cleared her throat. "It's just a heads-up we got from Fury. I don't know if..." She sighed. "Kurt, don't get your hopes up too much, OK? The last substantial thing I heard, he was seen from a helicopter in the Canadian mountains and he was running on all fours."
She watched his face and put her hand on his. "I know you want to talk to him. There are many others who want to... talk to him, too, for what he did to you, but I don't think they...I don't think they understand. I'm not mad at him anymore. I don't think Piotr's mad at him anymore." She bit her lip thoughtfully. "Were you ever mad at him?"
"No," he managed.
"I knew you weren't," she said and started crying. He reached for her and she buried her face in the blanket in his lap. "Damn. I was supposed to comfort you," she laughed between the tears.
She spent the rest of the day telling him little anecdotes from the mansion and when evening fell and she had to go, he asked her to leave him in his wheelchair on the back porch. She did, hugged him and left.
He watched the sun go down behind the trees. The other patients were all indoors watching a movie he had seen before. The treeline was growing darker and darker when he heard a sound from the bushes below the porch. He stared into the shadows and forgot to breathe.
The raggedy hair with leaves in it. The tattered t-shirt that had been white once. The beard and those eyes, wide and glistening in the filth of his face. That expression...
"Lo..." he managed and tried to move, muscles not budging. His breathing grew ragged as he struggled, his arm moving feebly. When the wheelchair toppled over, Logan caught him and they both burst into tears.
The sun had just set when nurse Helen found him in his chair. She fussed over his tear-streaked face, but his smile put her at ease. He kept smiling as she wheeled him to his room.
