He was in one of his funks, so when Kurt approached him with his trademark "carpe diem" attitude, Logan snapped at him and Kurt bamfed away. Three seconds later, he returned with two cold beer bottles, held them out to Logan with his head tilted in that way of his.
Logan grabbed one and sighed. "Thanks, Elf. I just...I just really rather be alone right now."
"I know," Kurt smiled. "They're both for you." And then he was gone.

For many nights in a row now, Logan's dreams had been variations on the same theme: he was walking alongside a river or a ravine and on the other side, walked Kurt. There was a bridge in the distance and they were both heading towards it, but for every step, it just seemed further away.
The landscape on Logan's side varied, but was always dark and alive with threat. Nothing he could see, nothing he could fight. Kurt's side, of course, seemed bright and lush. They kept striving to reach the bridge. It never got closer. Logan would wake up sweating and decide he didn't need more sleep that night.
Then, in one dream, one night, Kurt stopped. Logan couldn't make out his face from this distance, but it was clear he was looking Logan's way. He watched as Kurt knelt and started climbing down the ravine. The next night there was a river. The elf dove into it and started swimming. The night after that, Logan dove in, himself.
He opened his eyes and lay there on sweaty, wrinkled covers for a good half hour, staring up at the ceiling, making up his mind. Then he got dressed and walked over to Kurt's room, pulse pounding like before a fight.
"Logan?" Kurt rubbed his eyes. "Are you all right? What time is it?"
"I want to tell you everything." Logan's voice came out hoarse.
"...What?"
"My life. Everything. Everything I can remember. It's not pretty. But you should know."
Kurt frowned a little, his tail moving slowly among the covers. Then he nodded.
So Logan started talking and he felt like he was falling. He had stared the Hulk in the eye, but here, he couldn't look at Kurt's face. Instead, he studied the floor while his voice laid it all bare, Kurt's reactions like little needles pricking his skin. He kept on telling, all through the night and all through the dawn.
