Notes from a dream

Sep 12, 2011 00:28

So these are the notes I wrote down for a dream I had a while ago and never got around to.

This dream was inspired, I think, by a retold fairy tale anthology (My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me), reading too many XFC fics before bed and a scene at the end of The Fountain, where Hugh Jackman drinks tree sap and it ends badly for him.

Questions for future:
  1. Is this fanfic or what?
  2. Figure out the beginning, because seriously the end is basically worked out but, how the hell does this start?

Ghost story with cell phones, idk
    Bodies under floor boards
        - father, girl with the bastard child, pirate (?)
    New schoolhouse -> feels wrong
        - more like foundling home, orphanage
    "Click your heels half-a-dozen times"
Children are off, pale, bloated things

Man (CX) lives near school, acts as part time teacher
New man (EL) arrives in town to investigate, something to do with the school or the people involved with it - disappeared captain
        - falls in love with CX (how, why?)
    Island/ village girl (R) - part-time witch (?)

The school is run by an old woman who says she runs it in memory of her daughter, who ran away from home.  But the whole building wrong.  It's rotting, half covered in ivy, the floor boards are swollen with salt water and faintly green.

EL works with R and finds there used to be another school, ages ago, on further part of island (in woods).  EL goes there to look around, finds old collapsed building surrounded by metal fence.  Has video camera and records/ videos house at night.  EL notices a strange thing - he can see a red glow in the windows and all these little white flowers growing on the grounds glow orange, but the camera doesn't pick it up.  EL goes in, breaks into on the still standing (whole) rooms, sees what looks like a child hunched over a glowing thing, back to him.  As he approaches her, she spins around.  Her face is burnt and black bone.  She screams, throwing the glow at EL, who falls backward to the floor, a small flame burning his coat sleeve.  He quickly pats it out, and sees the fire spread through the school (whole again).

Climbing back out the window, he runs back to the fence, but the little flowers seem to grab at his ankles.  They're easy to break but the sheer number of them slows him down.  Looking back when he gets through the fence, he sees that it wasn't vines grabbing him, but little hands.  Dozens of children, none older than 18, with glowing orange eyes are standing, staring at him.  Some approach the fence, but don't dross it.  EL says"I don't mean to harm you.  I just want to know what's going on" (something like that).  They reply (as a collective or just a few one at a time?) that the foundling home matron was/ is a witch who wanted to live forever, so she ate the most vital (best, strongest, prettiest, smartest) when they came of age and 'left'.  She also fed bits of these to some of the younger ones (why?).  Someone finds out (witch's daughter?), and tells one of the children (why? the daughter saw the witch eat someone, one leaving promises to come back for a younger but never returns- idk).  The child, who rather than wait till they were of age or escape, sets the place on fire.  Most of the children die and left without proper (or any) burial, turn into the little flowers all over the grounds.  EL realizes (earlier than this - when?) that the matron of the current school is the same witch  The children warn/ remind him that the witch feed on the brightest (vitality, remember), and this in turn means that CX is in danger (of course he is).

The witch had meant to feed off her daughter in the end, but the girl had gotten pregnant by a sea captain (which means all her vitality goes to the child).  Upon finding this out, the witch flies into a rage, killing the girl and hiding her body under the floorboards.  She lures the captain back to the island with a fake letter, attacks him as he arrives and buries him, still alive, in a coffin with the daughter's body.

EL runs back through the woods calling CX (with his cell).  The first call gets cut off, the second goes unanswered, the third is answered by static, and the fourth is answered by distorted children's laughter.  He runs faster.  The sight of CX's house stops him in his tracks.  It has aged to a roofless, half standing wreck (front intact).  He opens the still in place front door and sees the pale bloated children playing 'inside' (now a lawn of weeds, grass and debris).  EL demands to know where CX is , they just laugh, he threatens them, then R (she's been around) reaches him and brings him to the school.

It's also a crumbling wreck, though much worse than CX's house.  R gets EL to help her clear away a layer of debris (leaf litter, broken boards, etc), revealing four skeletons.  The daughter, the captain and an unknown (EL thinks it's CX and breaks down a little).  The last turns out not to be a skeleton, but the witch, who has aged at least a hundred years, she laughs and taunts them, EL especially, with how delicious CX was, how mindlessly he had walked into her trap, etc.  EL nearly kills her, but R realizes that if CX can't be dead.  If the witch had fed off him, her spells wouldn't have broken, the witch refuses to tell them where CX is then.  EL, really at the end of his wits, remembers the ghost (flower) children and asks for their help.

The witch stops laughing as she is 'devoured' by a wave of little white flowers.  R (not quite a witch but close) eats one of the new flowers and learns the spell to find/ protect/ save CX.  But she has to be quick, because while the flowers helped them once, they're actually quick malevolent and would be perfectly happy to devour EL and R as well.  So poem-spell in the school frees the new ghosts (the daughter, the captain and the girl's father- the third skeleton (buried under the floor as a base holder/ power source for the witch)), who lead them back to CX's house as the wave of flowers consumes the rest of the building.  Another poem-spell (with the line "And two spears of sphinx grass, just for me").  EL and R run out of the house as the flowers start to consume it.  They slow and stop before blooming fully and melting/ shifting into regular grass (all the ghosts, spirits are released, as are the new ghosts).  EL runs back in to find CX, laying in an open grave, where the witch had buried him alive, covered in dirt but alright.  Cue recovery scene and an amount of explanations.

END
