Background:
Eowyn is the daughter of Theodwyn and Eomund and younger sister to Eomer. Orphaned at the age of seven, she and her brother were taken into the household of her uncle, King Theoden, who raised the two children as though they were his own. Yet the strong walls of the king's hall at Edoras were not enough to protect her from the war that was gradually intensifying throughout the years, and Eowyn was subjected to seeing the plight of her subjects as the Dark Lord's influence grew and spread across the lands. Devoted to her people, Eowyn made it her duty to protect her subjects and went as far as to hone down her abilities in wielding the blade and shield, becoming a skilled and fearless warrior. Seeing her brother and his soldiers depart on errantry, Eowyn also longed to win renown in battle. Yet she was a noblewoman and was expected to fulfill her duties solely in Edoras, a role she quickly came to resent.
When her uncle's mind was poisoned by his advisor, Grima Wormtongue, Eowyn had to set aside her desire to fight in battle and care for Theoden. As if her sadness at seeing her uncle's deteriorating state was not enough, she also had to silently withstand Grima's advances; it is said that Saruman had promised her to Grima as a prize for his assistance in the war. As time passed, Eowyn became more withdrawn and cold, repressed by the war and her own sorrows, becoming nothing more than a shadow of her former self.
She saw her salvation in Aragorn, for whom she developed feelings of adoration and idolatry. In her eyes, he was the one individual who could free her from her life at Edoras, someone who can elevate her to the greatness and renown she longed for. Yet when he denied her the chance to join him in battle and bade her to remain behind with her people, Eowyn despaired. Without any hope remaining, Eowyn disguised herself as a man and travelled with the Riders of Rohan to Gondor, seeking nothing more than a valient death in battle. During the battle of the Pelennor Fields, Eowyn challenged and defeated the Witch-king of Angmar to avenge her uncle, thereby fulfilling the 1,000-year-old prophecy by Glorfindel. She was quick to succumb to the effects of striking the Witch-king and was hastily brought to the Houses of Healing, where she was healed by Aragorn.
Personality:
Eowyn is as strong and unyielding as the blade she wields in battle. Like her brother, Eomer, she has the qualities that are typical of a hero: brave, fearless, and willingness to do what is needed to save the day. Yet even heroes can have their own faults, and in the case of Eowyn, her wayward recklessness surfaced when she became overwhelmed with despair and grief over Aragorn's rejection of her, leading her to seek her death in battle.
She has an unwavering sense of loyalty to those she cares for, as shown by her battling the Witch-king to avenge her uncle. Despite her declarations of wanting nothing more than to have others remember her for her prowess in combat and valient deeds, Eowyn longs to be loved by another, yet is also afraid that love itself would only make her a weaker and vulnerable individual. Her surroundings at Edoras led her to become a stern and stoic individual, yet beneath this cold exterior is a vulnerable and compassionate individual that others seldom see. Idealistic, willful and brave, Eowyn is also very lonely, having sacrificed her own wishes and happiness to care for her ailing uncle and fulfill her duties to her people.
Physical Description:
Tall and graceful with a lithe build and pale complexion, Eowyn is described to be very beautiful and has grey eyes and the long golden hair that is characteristic of her people. Despite her status as a noblewoman, Eowyn does not care for the finery of nobility, wearing minimal jewelry (if at all) and favoring simple and practical clothes over the more luxurious fabrics. This could also be a reflection of the active life she leads in Edoras, whether it be defending them in combat or carrying her weight in participating in the various day-to-day tasks.
Does your pup have any special powers/abilities/gifts that we should be aware of? (i.e. super healing, telepathic etc)
Aside from her skills as a warrior, Eowyn does not have any special powers.
What brings your character to the village? What does he need to learn/achieve, etc? (at least 100 words, please - can be anything big or small)
Eowyn needs to learn that there is more to life than achieving renown in battle. While she may not have appreciated his words at the time, she also needs to come to see the meaning in Aragorn's advice when he told her that not all brave deeds are achieved on the battlefield. An added benefit of living in the village is that it would allow Eowyn the chance to escape from her current life and live on her own terms. Perhaps if she also learns to let love and warmth into her life again, it would give her the opportunity to further grow and develop as an individual.
Why do you want to play this character?
I have always been fascinated with Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings canon and felt that she is perhaps one of the more misunderstood and misrepresented characters in the series. In the movies, she was portrayed as having romantic feelings for Aragorn, although I saw it more as her misinterpreting her adoration of him for love. Her relationship with Faramir was also rather rushed in the books, as was the transformation in her character. I think it would be interesting to play out this character and see what sort of interactions and relationships would help in her transition from the cold and sad individual that she was when she was first introduced to being the warm and happy young lady we saw toward the end of the series.
