557 years ago today, the Duke of York and his wife Cecily welcomed their youngest son Richard. Although Richard Plantagenet's reputation was smeared after the fact by the servants of Henry Tudor to justify Henry's usurping the throne, Richard is still remembered fondly by the city he ruled as the Duke of Gloucester and by Ricardians all over the world who have studied the true history.
Upon news of his death, his city of York risked Tudor wrath to record this memorandum:
"King Richard, late mercifully reigning upon us, was through great treason ... piteously slain and murdered, to the great heaviness of this city.'"
