All About The Lauriers

Oct 05, 2011 16:01

Yesterday I started getting more nervous about my Barbarian Queen poster and my 5 most recent Ebay drawing auction purchases not arriving when they "should" have. Of course they both showed up today.

The package with the drawings was delivered around 7:55 this morning. Apparently it's a new guy since he buzzed the apartment and said "Canada Post" (he did the same thing last week with the last drawing I received). In the 3 years we've lived here, almost all of the Canada Post truck deliveries have been delivered with stealth, as the delivery guy just uses a master key and sneaks up the stairs and puts the package outside our door. I wonder if this new guy is a permanent replacement or if he's just doing it temporarily.

► For the past 2 or 3 years the Canadian dollar has been consistently stronger than the American dollar, as we weren't hit as hard by the 2008 recession. Lately though the Canadian media has been screaming doom and brimstone over a major recession about to hit us, despite the fact that while we've been better off we have been in a recession. Anyway, last week the Canadian dollar was worth about $1.02 or so American, but since the weekend it has been dropping steadily, about a penny a day. Yesterday the Canadian dollar was $0.95 American, and today it dropped down to $0.93. That's crappy.

The reason I know all this is because I just won 3 drawings on Ebay today. The total with shipping and handled was roughly $45 US. Last week that would have cost me around $43 Canadian, but today it cost me over $49. I hope that the dollar doesn't drop any further and starts to rise again, because this is incredibly frustrating. If the dollar drops more, I imagine it'll mean the cover price of comic books will start to skyrocket again in Canada (before 2008 a $2.50 American comic book cost almost $4 Canadian, which was not the exchange rate). I know, small whoop.

Edit (morning of October 6th, 2013): I checked the exchange rate in the middle of the night while online and the Canadian dollar had raised to $0.96 America. That made me feel better.

► As mentioned above, I won 3 drawings on Ebay today. Stunned the hell out of me as I thought I'd lose all of my bids (I bid on 7 by the seller and lost 4). The three drawings I won are all by an artist named Ediano Silva. The first is of Mera, and the second and third drawings are both Lady Blackhawk (my first artwork of her). What strikes me as funny is that of the seven drawings I bid on, the one I bid the most was Mera, and it's the only one that no one else bid on at all. I don't expect that to happen to me often.

Precept Wine brands: Chocolate Shop - Only but the finest of 5 star restaurants stock chocolate wine.

Think Geek: Captain America Hoodie - I would love to get this, but I suppose it might look weird my wearing it around town given I'm Canadian and live in Canada.

'Batwoman' #2: Sneak peek at the new DC Comic! - Page 3 - So that's Batwoman's origin/motivation? That's pretty cool. Last thing I read with her (52) she seemed to still have to old "bored heiress" background but with the lesbian hook.

Lars Von Trier Releases Public Statement: He'll never be interviewed again - I think the whole thing is an incredible overreaction (Von Trier may face prosecution in France on "justification of war crimes" charges for joking at the Cannes film festival about being a Nazi and sympathizing with Hitler). That said I also think Von Trier is a self-aggrandizing enfant terrible who fashions himself an iconoclastic provoquer when he's just a loudmouthed idiot. Eh, when you flap your mouth off as much as he does eventually you'll end up biting yourself in the ass.

Animated Series BEWARE THE BATMAN Announced for 2013 - My god, is there some law that says Batman can't be off television for more than a year and a half? Since 1992 we've had Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, The Batman, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I was hoping we might get a new Superman cartoon in time for 2013 since it's his 75th anniversary, but I guess not. Yeesh.

Eh, I suppose I should just finally get the shortlived 1988 Superman cartoon series DVD. I've been meaning to order it for a couple of years now.
