► Laying in bed so much these past two weeks is starting to make me feel odd (that's on top of the back and abdominal pains that have had me supine for so long). It just seems that laying down so much with my neck bent watching TV has aggravated my old neck injuries and I've been feeling groggy and cotton-headed for the past 2 days. I just need to move around a bit more.
Hmm, I also seem to have a sore swollen gland in the back of my neck. Hopefully that'll go away soon.
Today was actually pretty pleasant. It was quite warm all day, but the humidity wasn't bad and there was a slight gentle breeze. Much better weather than the opressive heat and humidity of the past week. Sadly, the heat and humidity are supposed to soar tomorrow and Thursday. If our bathtub and bathroom weren't so gross I'd spend the next couple of days soaking in cool water.
► I feel guilty about this, but since I've been offline so much the last two weeks, I'm having a really difficult time motivating myself to post journal entries. It's sad because last month I only missed 1 day out of 30. However. I'm not entirely sure anyone has noticed how little I've posted recently. Still, I'll try to get back into the groove even if just to keep this journal going for myself.
► Last week my friend
John was telling me about the drawing he had commissioned from artist
Kevin Sharpe. To make up for some delays in finishing the drawing, Kevin had offered John a discount for 2 single character/no background drawings if he was interested. John mentioned this to me because he suggested that he could get one of the sketches for me. In the past I had mentioned how much I liked how Sharpe drew
Superman, and that I'd someday like to commission of him. John's idea was that if I agreed he would pay Sharpe for the new drawings, and I could pay him back for mine next month. Thinking about it, I agreed, although I decided to pay John more than half of the money already (I'll send him the rest at the end of the month).
I'm really looking forward to this drawing because Superman is my favourite character and yet I still don't have any artwork featuring him. All I asked for is a strong, powerful looking Superman in his classic costume (not the NuDC costume debuting in September), but with a friendly smile. Superman should look like a warm friendly guy, not a surly malcontent.
This morning John sent me an email with the rough preliminary sketch for my drawing (Kevin had sent it to him a couple of days ago). While I keep picturing a Canadian flag behind him, or kryptonite chains exploding from his arms and chest, I think it looks very super as is!

DCU The Source: The New Man of Tomorrow - The new changes to
Superman's status quote will emphasize him as an alien "loner" who's "younger, brasher and more brooding".
Smallville raised Clark is no longer his true personality, the outcast Kryptonian "freak" is. The
Kents are now both dead, he never married
Lois, and she's involved with someone else. Just when I was finally feeling better about the impeding line wide retcon, they announce this.
An angry emo alien Superman? DC seems to really be trying to shoehorn
Twilight's depressed and moody teen vampires into Superman. Colour me disappointed.
Apparently,
I'm not alone. Superman should symbolize hope, courage, strength, compassion, justice, and tomorrow. He is not
Batman. He is not
Edward Cullen. He should not brood about the past. I keep getting the impression that Superman flat out embarrasses DC Comics.

DC Comics Solicitations for October, 2011 - Seeing the Superman's new costume on the covers of Superman #2, Justice League #2, and Supergirl #2 it doesn't bother me as much. Still, I continue to question the logic of Superman wearing "Kryptonian armour". He's Superman!
Also, it's only the second month of the new DC relaunch and no fewer than 2 comics feature Superman knock-down-drag-out physically fighting a fellow superhero? [sigh]

LEE, DIDIO: Rebuilding DC To Counteract 'Shrinking Market' - If the comic book companies would sell their comics in more places than just comic book shops they'd reach a wider audience.
Why the hell can they not see that?
Furthering the talk about changes to the
DC Universe continuity, their new September relaunch will have superheroes only debuting "five years ago". How the hell does that make any sense when you have
Dick Grayson as a mid 20s
Nightwing and former pre-teen
Robin, and
Damien remaining as the current Robin and
Batman's son at roughly 10 when he was conceived after Bruce had been Batman for several years? This doesn't make any sense. They should not have said a definitive dating of "five years ago" because there's no way it'd work. It would have been better left vague and undefined.
I think
DC is making some incredible missteps with the relaunch. They're radically changing and dumping a lot of things to try to appeal to new readers, but they aren't actually doing anything to make their comics accessible to new readers (assuming they'll just suddenly go into dusty comic shops or decide to start downloading comics to their iPhones). The chance of gaining new readers is very small. The chance of all of these radical changes alienating, offending, and driving away their long time loyal readers is much greater.
It's a noble experiment, and you could say it's a crap-shot, but I think DC may actually be playing Russian roulette.
